Today's Game-- The RedHawks will try and snap out of their recent funk when they take on the Salt Lake Bees tonight at 8:05 p.m. central time.
Last Night-- The Bees hit three home runs to power their way past the RedHawks, 6-4. The Bees opened the scoring in the second when John Hester connected on a two-run homer. On the very next pitch, Ryan Langerhans followed with a solo shot to give Salt Lake a three-run lead. The RedHawks got on the board in the fifth when Brad Snyder contributed with his 17th home run of the season. However, Salt Lake got the run back in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth, the RedHawks scored three times to pull even. Fernando Martinez drove in a pair with a double, and two batters later, Snyder tied the game with an RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Hank Conger belted a two-run homer off Brian Sanches (0-1) to give Salt Lake a 6-4 lead, which they would not relinquish.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Recently called up from Double-A Corpus Christi, Ross Seaton makes the start for the RedHawks...In 22 starts for the Hooks this season, Seaton is 6-8 with a 4.41 ERA...He is tied for the Texas League lead with 22 starts and his 128.2 IP ranks second...He was named a 2011 Texas League All-Star and went 5-4 with a 4.03 ERA before the break...However, he's hit a bit of a rough patch, going 0-3 with a 9.31 ERA over his last four starts with the Hooks...Tonight he will be pitching on three days' rest...He left after throwing 74 pitches in his last start Thursday against San Antonio due to today's impending outing (3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 K)...He made one spot start for the RedHawks on April 22, allowing six runs--five earned--and seven hits over 4.2 innings against Albuquerque...Seaton retired nine of the first 10 hitters he faced that day before allowing six runs in the fourth inning...Garrett Richards will start for Salt Lake after recently being optioned from the Angels...Richards has almost evenly split this season between the Bees and Angels, and tonight will be just his second start for Salt Lake since late May...In 10 games with the Angels, including nine starts, Richards is 3-2 with a 4.33 ERA...In his previous start Wednesday against the Texas Rangers, Richards allowed five runs and nine hits over 5.2 IP...Six of his 11 starts with Salt Lake have been quality starts, but in his last PCL appearance on July 12 in Reno, he allowed eight runs and 11 hits over 3.1 IP...Richards grew up in Edmond and was the 42nd overall pick of the 2009 draft after starring at Oklahoma.
Castro's Coming to Town-- Astros catcher Jason Castro is scheduled to join the RedHawks today on rehab assignment. Castro was placed on the DL on July 8 with right knee effusion. He spent the last three days with Corpus Christi and went 4-for-5 with two doubles. This season with Houston, Castro is hitting .254/2/20 in 54 games.
Tumbling From the Peak-- After a four-game sweep in Omaha on July 19 put the RedHawks at a season-best 18 games above .500 (58-40), they have gone 5-12 since. Nine of the losses have come against teams with losing records. After the sweep, they led the division by two games, but now trail Albuquerque by 2.5 games.
Tough Ten-- The RedHawks have dropped eight of their last 10 games, including seven of their last eight. They're only hitting .239 during this stretch, and just .234 on the current road trip. In two of the defeats they held a lead at least five runs. Friday they fell in extras after leading with one out in the ninth.
High "Snydes"-- Brad Snyder has hit safely in each of his last 12 starts. Over his last five games he's gone 7-for-17 with four RBIs. He's the only player in all of Triple-A with at least 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases.
Angel in the Infield-- Angel Sanchez is 9-for-23 over his last five games. Since the end of May, Sanchez has hit .349 (53-for-152).
Uncle Buck-- Over his last 13 games, Travis Buck is hitting .442 (19-for-43) with six RBIs. He's had a multi-hit game in seven of his last 11 starts. In six games as DH, Buck is hitting .500 (11-for-22).
He's Not Brett, But He Hits Like Him-- After going 0-for-6 over his first three games with the RedHawks, Chris Wallace has hit safely in each of his last seven contests, going 9-for-21 with seven RBIs.
Mound Troubles-- The pitching staff has allowed at least five runs in 18 of the last 22 games as well as in 20 of 25 games since the break. The staff ERA over the last 22 games is 6.60 (136 ER/185.1 IP). Their 5.29 season ERA is now the highest in the Minors. Yesterday they gave up three homers in a game for the 12th time this season.
Double Trouble-- The RedHawks have hit into eight double plays over the last four games. They've also hit into at least one double play in seven of their last eight games.
Quick One-- Yesterday was the first RedHawks game completed in less than two-and-a-half hours since June 15 at Round Rock--a span of 47 games.
Against the Bees-- This is the only series in 2012 between these squads...Last season Salt Lake took three of four in Oklahoma City, May 14-17...Each game was decided by three runs or less, including two one-run wins by the Bees...The RedHawks hit just .228 and scored 10 runs...The Bees only tallied 12 runs and did not hit a home run...On their last trip to Salt Lake in 2010, the RedHawks split a four-game set.
