Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs lost the first contest of a four-game series to the first-place Clinton LumberKings 8-1 Saturday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss drops the Chiefs second-half record to 16-25 and 51-59 on the season.
The LumberKings got on the board in the top of the first against Joe Zeller. Patrick Brady was hit by a pitch on the first offering of the ballgame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Phillips. Dan Paolini hit a soft fly ball into right field to put Brady at third and Clinton scored on a Kevin Rivers sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead.
Clinton added to their lead in the top of the second. Dillon Hazlett singled with one out and James Zamarripa doubled to score Hazlett and give the LumberKings a 2-0 lead. Phillips singled past a diving Paul Hoilman with two outs to drive in Zamarripa and give Clinton an early 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, Peoria used the long ball to get on the board against Trevor Miller. Chadd Krist came to bat with one out and drove a 1-2 offering off the nets in left field for his second homer of the year to make the score 3-1.
Clinton answered with a home run of their own in the top of the third. Rivers lead off the inning with a double to left center and Jabari Blash launched a Zeller pitch deep into left center for a two-run homer to extend the LumberKings lead to 5-1.
A series of miscues for the Chiefs led to another LumberKings run in the top of the fourth. After Zeller retired the first two batters of the innings, Rivers reached on an error by Wes Darvill and advanced to second on a wild pickoff attempt by Zeller. Michael Dowd singled on a ground ball to left to drive in Rivers and push Clinton's lead to 6-1.
Luis Liria entered in relief of Larry Suarez in the seventh and control issues led to another Clinton run. Guillermo Pimentel walked with one out and moved to second on a base hit by Hazlett. After Zamarripa lined out, Brady walked to load the bases. With Phillips up to bat, Liria sailed a pitch to the backstop bringing home Pimentel and the LumberKings lead was extended to 7-1.
Clinton's scoring didn't stop in the top of the eighth. Rivers doubled to start the inning off Liria who was then replaced by Bryce Shafer. Dowd grounded out to Darvill to put Rivers at third and he came around to score on a two-out base hit from Pimentel and the LumberKings led 8-1.
Zeller (2-3) took the loss going 3 2/3 innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Suarez threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three. In one inning of work, Liria allowed two runs on two hits and three walks. Shafer pitched two innings without surrendering a run and he allowed two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Chadd Krist (DH) - Krist supplied all of the offense for the Chiefs Saturday night. He was 2-4 at the plate and his home run in the second inning was the lone run scored for the Chiefs. He hit a double in the fourth as well that got stuck between the right-field wall and padding.
