Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees had three straight hits to start the eighth inning against Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Kyle Barraclough to break a 4-4 tie and scored three times in the inning to come away with a 7-4 victory Saturday night at Community Field.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Barraclough (0-2) allowed a leadoff single to Bees first baseman Max Muncy and an infield single to designated hitter Rashun Dixon. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, before third baseman Wade Kirkland hit a line drive through the drawn-in infield to right field for a go-ahead RBI single. After a groundout by catcher Nick Rickles, Barraclough intended to walk second baseman Chih-Fang Pan, but his first intentional ball got past catcher Casey Rasmus, allowing Dixon to score and Kirkland to reach third base. Pan then put down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Kirkland and make it 7-4.
Right-hander Jonathan Joseph started the ninth inning for Burlington (23-18 second half, 55-55 overall) and allowed a two-out single by second baseman Luis Mateo before picking up his 12th save. It gave a victory to Bees right-hander Seth Frankoff (4-7), who was perfect in relief for the sixth through eighth innings.
Until the eighth inning, the River Bandits bullpen gave an equally strong effort, as left-hander Jonathan Cornelius pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings with just two hits and six strikeouts. He relieved right-handed starter Willy Paulino, who allowed just one hit but lost a 3-0, third-inning lead and was charged with four runs - one earned - while walking five batters and striking out five in the first 2 2/3 innings.
The River Bandits (19-22, 54-56 overall) scored twice in the first inning, as shortstop Matt Williams hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI double by right fielder David Medina. Left fielder Anthony Garcia added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
In the third inning, Quad Cities third baseman Stephen Piscotty hit a two-out solo home run - his second professionally and first in exactly one month. But Piscotty committed two throwing errors in the bottom of the inning that combined with three walks and a wild pitch by Paulino to help the Bees score four runs and take a 4-3 lead.
Garcia tied the game leading off the fourth inning with a home run to left field. It was his 16th of the season - tying him with teammate Colin Walsh for second most in the Midwest League. Garcia also became the first River Bandit with home runs in three consecutive games this season. The River Bandits almost took the lead in the same inning. Center fielder Nick Martini hit a two-out single, and Rasmus hit a double to right-center field, but Martini was thrown out at home plate on the relay from center field to end the inning.
The River Bandits and Bees continue their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., when Quad Cities right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (2-4) opposes Burlington left-hander Chris Lamb (0-1).
