Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Marquez Smith ripped a two out single to the gap in right-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Zach Gentile to give the Portland Sea Dogs (52-62) a 2-1 walk-off win over the Erie SeaWolves (50-63) Saturday night at Hadlock Field before a crowd of 6,085. The Sea Dogs have won 23 of their last 37 (.621) home games and ten of their last 11 home series.
Tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, Erie reliever Ryan Robowski (1-1) struck out Peter Hissey and Ryan Dent setting up a dramatic two out rally. Gentile singled and Jackie Bradley Jr. walked on four pitches. Smith ripped a ball to the gap in right-center field and Gentile raced home for the win.
The Sea Dogs once again received outstanding pitching. Stolmy Pimentel turned-in his team high eighth quality start in a no decision. Pimentel allowed one run on five hits over six innings. He walked a season high five and recorded two strikeouts.
The Sea Dogs bullpen fired three shutout innings, the staff has been scoreless in 132 of their last 156 innings pitched. Chris Martin tossed two shutout innings in relief of Pimentel. Michael Olmsted (1-0) earned his first Double-A win with a perfect ninth. He has not allowed a run in four Double-A appearances.
Erie got on the scoreboard first when Avisail Garcia singled, stole second, and scored on a Brandon Douglas RBI single to left off Pimentel.
An error by Erie second baseman, Douglas, allowed Portland to tie the game in the fifth inning. Dent and Gentile had back-to-back singles. With two outs, Douglas booted a Marquez Smith ground ball loading the bases. Jeremy Hazelbaker took advantage of the opportunity with a single to score Dent tying the game.
Travis Shaw doubled in the second inning and has now reached base safely in all four of his Double-A appearances.
The Sea Dogs look to sweep the series with a 1:00 PM game on Sunday afternoon. Boston Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with the Sea Dogs. Right-handed pitcher Steven Wright (9-6, 2.49) is scheduled to make his Red Sox organization debut Sunday afternoon. Wright was acquired on Tuesday from the Cleveland Indians organization in exchange for former Sea Dog Lars Anderson. The SeaWolves will send righty James Avery (10-8, 4.25) to the mound. The game can be heard live on 95.5/95.9 FM WPEI. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs ticket office at 207-879-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com.
The Sea Dogs will open the gates early on Sunday to allow fans to play catch on the field from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM. Following the game, kids 16 and under can run the bases (weather and field conditions permitting), courtesy of Prime Motor Group.
