Clinton LumberKings News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA "" The LumberKings bid for their first four-game sweep of the year came up short on Friday night at Perfect Game Field. In the end, the Kernels came up with clutch hits and the LumberKings didn't and Clinton fell 8-4 in the series finale.
The Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and then added two insurance runs in the eighth. Meanwhile, Clinton left seven runners on base in the final three innings. Kevin Rivers struck out to end the seventh with the bases loaded and Dillon Hazlett bounced out with runners at the corners to end the eighth. The LumberKings had the tying run in the on deck circle in the ninth when the Kernels' Eric Stamets robbed Patrick Brady of a hit and an RBI with a diving stop and perfect throw to first to end the game.
It was a back and forth affair all night as the LumberKings took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on Jharmidy De Jesus' RBI double. The Kernels came right back against Seon-Gi Kim with two home runs in the bottom of the inning; a two-run shot by Gary Mitchell and a solo blast from Abel Baker.
Clinton tied the game on a two-run blast from Dan Paolini, his second of the series. The moonshot from Paolini came on the 12th pitch of the at bat against Eswarlin Jimenez. The Kernels took the lead right back in the fifth inning and did the same after Clinton tied the game in the sixth.
David Colvin was tagged with the loss for Clinton and dropped to 4-3 on the season after he allowed two runs on four hits in two innings in relief. Logan Odom picked up the win for Cedar Rapids despite being charged with a blown save. The LumberKings were 1 for 10 with runners and scoring position and the Kernels were 4 for 5.
Clinton is now 3-1 on the eight-game road trip and travels to Peoria for four games with the Chiefs. Clinton turns to right-hander Trevor Miller (6-7, 3.48) and Peoria counters with right-hander Joe Zeller (2-2, 1.85) for the game one on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
