
Sea Dogs Take Series From Akron with 3-0 Shutout

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (50-62) took two out of three games from the league's best team; the Akron Aeros (66-45), with a 3-0 victory before a sold out crowd at Hadlock Field Thursday afternoon. Drake Britton and two relievers combined to shutout the Aeros while Jackie Bradley Jr. led the offensive attack with a 2-for-4 performance with a home run and two runs scored.
The shutout was the sixth of the season and second of the series for the Portland pitching staff. Portland pitchers held the Indians affiliate scoreless in 26 of the 27 innings in the three game series. The Sea dogs are now 10-4 at home since the All-Star break.
Jackie Bradley Jr. led-off the game for Portland by depositing a T.J. House offering into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion. Bradley's fifth Double-A home run gave the Sea Dogs a quick 1-0 lead.
Britton (3-4) fired five shutout innings scattering six hits. He walked three and struck out six. Britton escaped jams in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth Thomas Neal had a one out single. Adam Abraham followed with a single to right field that was misplayed by Bryce Brentz. Neal raced to the plate but centerfielder Jackie Bradley hit the cut-off man, second baseman Ryan Dent, and Dent fired home to catcher Matt Spring, Neal and Spring collided at the plate but Spring held on to prevent the run. In the fifth Britton escaped a two out bases loaded jam by striking out Chun Chen.
The Sea Dogs added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Marquez Smith led-off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Jeremy Hazelbaker bunt. Smith scored when Bryce Brentz connected for an infield single.
The Sea Dogs bullpen continued its dominance Thursday firing four scoreless innings. Portland's bullpen has held opponents scoreless in 116 of their last 139 innings pitched. Ryan Pressly relieved Britton in the sixth and tossed two shutout innings allowing three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Josh Fields pitched the final two frames of the game earning his eighth save of the year. He worked two shutout innings allowing one hit, no walks and struck out two. He has allowed only one earned run in his last 24.1 innings of work.
House (6-3) suffered the loss despite pitching seven solid innings. House limited the Sea Dogs to five hits. Only one of the two runs scored was earned. He struck out a season high nine batters.
Bradley Jr. led-off the eighth inning with a single giving him his 14th multi hit Double-A game. Smith followed with a single and Bryce Brentz picked-up his team leading 53rd RBI with a single to extend the Sea Dogs lead to 3-0.
The Sea Dogs will welcome the Erie SeaWolves to town for a three game weekend series starting at 7:00 PM on Friday. The Sea Dogs will send righty Jeremy Kehrt (5-3, 4.50) to the mound. Erie will counter with south paw Ramon Garcia (7-7, 4.32). The action can be heard live on 95.5/ 95.9 FM WPEI. Friday night is Irish at the ballpark, complete with an Irish band, dancers, beer, and more.
