WAPPINGERS FALLS: The Hudson Valley Renegades got back on the winning track with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (24-16) scorched the Crosscutters (13-27) with a five- run fifth inning that erased a 3-0 deficit and hoisted the home team into the lead to stay. The win gave the 'Gades a two-game lead over the Brooklyn Cyclones in the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League.
The Crosscutters jumped out to the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Hudson Valley starter Jeff Ames (3-0) hit leadoff man Roman Quinn with a pitch, and Mitch Walding singled Quinn to third on a grounder to right field. Larry Greene lofted a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Quinn for the first run with one out. Christopher Serritella slashed a double to left that scored Walding, and Yan Carlos Olmo singled home Serritella with two outs to make it 3-0 in favor of Williamsport.
The Renegades broke through against Williamsport starter Luis Gonzalez in the fifth inning. Right fielder Joel Caminero doubled to left- center field to lead off the inning, and moved up to third on a passed ball by catcher Logan Moore. Catcher Jake DePew walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out, and center fielder Deshun Dixon took advantage, doubling home Caminero to cut the Crosscutters' lead to 3-1.
That was all for Gonzalez, who gave way to righty Ulises Joaquin. Left fielder Marty Gantt welcomed Joaquin to the game rudely, singling through the left side to bring home DePew and move Dixon to third. Designated hitter Justin O'Conner bounced a chopper to short that Quinn flubbed, allowing Dixon to score and Gantt and O'Conner to reach safely. With the score tied, second baseman Tommy Coyle drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. First baseman Luke Maile hit a ground out to Quinn that advanced all the runners and brought home Gantt with the go-ahead run. With one out, third baseman Leonardo Reginatto bounced a slow roller to third that gave O'Conner enough time to race home and run the Renegades' lead to 5-3.
Ames picked up his third victory, giving up three runs on four hits over five innings while whiffing five batters. Jose Molina tossed three scoreless innings of relief, striking out two while walking two and allowing a hit. Ryan Garton earned his second save, tossing a scoreless ninth on two walks and fanning one.
Gonzalez allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over four innings; he struck out three. Ulises Joa quin (0-1) took the loss over two innings of work, coughing up two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks against five strikeouts. Ramon Oviedo threw two scorelss frames, striking out four batters against two hits and a walk.
The Renegades and Crosscutters will face off again Sunday at Dutchess Stadium, with righty Jesse Hahn taking the hill for the 'Gades against right-hander Jonathan Musser. It's Youth Wallet Day, sponsored by TD Bank, with the first 1,000 kids through the gates receiving a free youth wallet courtesy of TD Bank and the Renegades! First pitch is at 5:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show beginning at 4:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
