Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Binghamton, NY - The Portland Sea Dogs (48-60) used a three-run first inning and staved off any comebacks by the Binghamton Mets (50-56) in the 5-1 win Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and is the first for the Sea Dogs on the road at Binghamton in 2012.
The Sea Dogs came out swinging against B-Mets' starter Greg Peavey. After a leadoff walk was drawn by Jackie Bradley Jr., Jeremy Hazelbaker got the scoring going with a two run home run and the Sea Dogs never looked back. The Dogs' added another in the frame when Marquez Smith and Reynaldo Rodriguez hit back-to-back doubles to plate the third run.
Portland padded its lead with a run in the second and a run in the fifth, both courtesy of sacrifice flies off the bat of Smith.
All of the runs came in support of starter Jeremy Kehrt. The righty delivered five and two-thirds innings and allowed a run on five hits; he walked four and struck out three. Kehrt (5-3) was lifted relief by Michael Olmsted. The big righty threw one pitch in the sixth to get close the book on Kehrt.
Olmsted was dominant in his two innings pitched. The newest Sea Dogs' arm struck out five, allowed just one hit and threw 24 pitches, 20 of which were strikes. Josh Fields completed the night on the mound for the Sea Dogs.
The Mets plated their lone run in the third inning after Wilfredo Tovar doubled to lead off the frame and scored on an Eric Campbell ground out to third.
Peavey (4-7) tossed the first six innings for Binghamton, and settled into a nice groove following his first two frames. The righty allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks; he added four strikeouts. Armando Rodriguez took over for Peavey and pitched two scoreless before turning it over to Adam Kolarek for the ninth.
