Oklahoma City, Okla. - The New Orleans Zephyrs (49-45) used two big innings and strong pitching performances to beat the Oklahoma City RedHawks (53-40) by a score of 8-0 in front of 9,985 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Saturday night.
After a 27-minute rain delay, both teams had scoreless first innings. The Zephyrs then pounced for five runs in the top of the second. Catcher Luke Montz had an RBI-groundout and starting pitcher Elih Villanueva hit an RBI-single to left field to give New Orleans a 2-0 lead. Kevin Mattison stepped up next and hit a three-run home run to right field to widen the gap. It was the centerfielder's second home run in as many days and his eighth of the year.
Villanueva (6-4) kept the RedHawks in check throughout six strong innings. After giving up four hits in the first two innings, Villanueva gave up just two hits and one walk over the next four innings. For the night, Villanueva gave up six hits and one walk, while striking out three.
Oklahoma City starter Armando Galarraga (2-2) settled down after the rough second inning to pitch three scoreless innings before leaving at the end of the fifth. Galarraga finished with five innings, five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.
Aneury Rodriguez replaced Galarraga to start the sixth inning. After a three up, three down inning, Rodriguez gave up back-to-back singles to start the seventh. Rodriguez then intentionally walked shortstop Nick Green to face Luke Montz. Montz made Oklahoma City pay with a bases-clearing double to left field that was inches away from a grand slam giving New Orleans an 8-0 lead.
New Orleans' Juan Oviedo replaced Villanueva to start the seventh inning. After getting RedHawks catcher Carlos Corporan to fly out on the first pitch, J.B. Shuck walked and Brandon Barnes hit a single. Oviedo then left the game with an apparent injury after throwing a pitch to the next batter, Marwin Gonzalez.
Robert Ray replaced Oviedo and worked out of the jam by getting Gonzalez to ground out and striking out Brett Wallace. Ray pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to end the game.
