Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - A pair of Andrew Brown homers sent the Tacoma Rainiers to a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in front of 6,519 fans at Cheney Stadium on Friday.
The Rainiers held a late 3-2 edge until Brown's solo home run off reliever Scott Patterson tied the game with one out in the top of the ninth inning. The outfielder struck again in the 11th, hitting another one-run homer - this one off right-hander Steven Hensley - to ultimately put the Sky Sox on top for good.
Darren Ford spearheaded a rally that gave Tacoma a one-run lead in the sixth inning. The outfielder erased Colorado Springs's 2-1 advantage with a two-run single with two outs in the frame. Ford has now hit safely in 20 of his first 21 games this season, and is currently riding a career-best 16-game hitting streak.
As a team, the Rainiers collected a combined eight hits against the Sky Sox on Friday. Third baseman Vinnie Catricala led the club after collecting two hits - his third multi-hit effort over his last five games.
Infielder Nick Franklin's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the second inning cut a 2-0 Rainiers deficit down to one run. Franklin has now homered twice for the Rainiers this season.
Hensley (1-2) was dealt the loss after surrendering Brown's go-ahead homer in the 11th inning. The reliever Patterson had turned in ten consecutive scoreless appearances (10.2 IP) before giving up the game-tying home run to Brown in the ninth.
Starter Danny Hultzen tossed 5.0 innings in his fourth turn in the Rainiers rotation. The left-hander held the Sky Sox to two runs - one earned - on eights while walking three and striking out seven.
The third leg of the four-game set between the Rainiers (39-52) and Sky Sox (46-45) is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 14. Right-hander Hector Noesi (0-0, -.--) is slated to make his Rainiers debut in the contest against Colorado Springs' left-hander Edwar Cabrera (2-0, 3.86).
