Iowa Cubs News Release

Papillion, NE - WIll Smith pitched seven strong innings to lead the Omaha Storm Chasers (57-36) to a 4-3 win over the Iowa Cubs (39-54) at Werner Park tonight, ending the Cubs' four-game winning streak. The Cubs scored twice in the top of the ninth inning and had the potential tying run at third when Vin Mazzaro got Dave Sappelt to flyout to secure the win. This series is tied 1-1 and the Storm Chasers lead the season series 8-6.

Smith (4-4) limited the Cubs to one run on seven hits and struck out six over seven innings to earn the win. The Cubs scored their only run against him in the fourth inning when Adrian Cardenas led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Josh Vitters.

Cubs' starter Brooks Raley (4-5) turned in a strong start, but suffered his third straight loss. The Storm Chasers got on the board first with a run in the third inning. Irving Falu reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a single by Johnny Giavotella. It was another two-out rally that led to Omaha's second run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, David Lough tripled and scored on a single by Anthony Seratelli.

The Cubs' defense let them down in the bottom of the seventh inning, helping the Storm Chasers pad their lead with two unearned runs against Ryan Rowland-Smith. With one out, Falu bunted back to the mound, but Rowland-Smith threw wide of first for an error. With two outs, Falu stole second and the Cubs intentionally walked Wil Myers. Clint Robinson followed with a fly ball to center that fell behind Brett Jackson on the warning track. It was ruled a two-run double, but Jackson appeared to be in position to make the catch. Both runs were unearned and proved to be valuable insurance for the Storm Chasers.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Mazzaro walked Blake DeWitt and Welington Castillo singled. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Mazzaro walked Diory Hernandez to load the bases. Alfredo Amezaga lined the first pitch he saw for a two-run single to right-center to pull the Cubs to within one before Mazzaro closed out the game for his first save.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Werner Park. RH Randy Wells (3-2, 6.70) will start for the Cubs against RH Jake Odorizzi (5-0, 2.83) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
