New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
A six-run eighth inning lifted the Oklahoma City RedHawks past the New Orleans Zephyrs 10-9 before a near-record crowd of 11,778 on Independence Day at Zephyr Field.
The Zephyrs nursed a 5-4 lead into the eighth inning before the RedHawks opened up the floodgates, scoring six runs for a 10-5 lead. Fernando Martinez and Brett Wallace singled before Travis Buck drew a walk to load the bases against reliever Dan Jennings.
With Evan Reed on the mound, Martinez scored on a passed ball by Clint Sammons. With one out, Brad Snyder was intentionally walked, and Landon Powell singled up the middle, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs.
Brandon Barnes laid down a bunt to score Snyder, before Marwin Gonzalez doubled for two more runs.
New Orleans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Kevin Mattison led off with a double to right and scored on a single up the middle from Gil Velazquez.
Oklahoma City took the lead in the third after Powell doubled to shallow left field and Gonzalez doubled him in. Jimmy Paredes singled to right and scored on Martinez's single to left field.
The Zephyrs quickly answered back in the bottom of the frame with a Velazquez single through the hole at shortstop, followed by back-to-back homers from Chris Coghlan and Mike Cervenak, making it 4-2. It was the second time in three days the Zephyrs had consecutive home runs.
Martinez homered in the top of the fifth to bring the RedHawks within a run, but the Zephyrs got the run back in the sixth on Donnie Murphy's RBI single, but the Z's failed to capitalize further, leaving runners at the corners with nobody out.
Oklahoma City took advantage of the opening to score six times in the eighth, but the Zephyrs were not done yet.
Coghlan led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and Mike Cervenak walked. Bryan Petersen reached on a fielder's choice before Coghlan scored on a single by Nick Green. Murphy then doubled off the left field wall, scoring Petersen and Green. Clint Sammons hit an RBI groundout to bring the Z's within one run, but pinch-hitter Chris Aguila lined out to right field for the final out of the ball game.
Dan Jennings (0-1) took the loss for New Orleans after giving up four runs on four hits with one walk in one inning of relief of starter J.D. Martin, who threw six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits with four strikeouts.
Adalberto Flores (5-1) tabbed the win in one inning of relief for Oklahoma City, allowing just one hit and fanning one.
New Orleans will continue the series at 7pm on Thursday. Southpaw Brad Hand will take the mound for the Zephyrs, facing Oklahoma City's right-hander Brian Bass.
