Greenville Snaps Charleston's Win Streak

CHARLESTON, SC - Jose Garcia had two hits, including a three-run homer, for the Greenville Drive as they defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 10-2 on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in South Atlantic League action with 5,082 in the stands.

The loss snapped Charleston's five game winning streak and put their record at 44-32 (5-4 in the second half) on the year. Greenville's victory means they are now 39-40 (5-4 in the second half) in 2012.

The RiverDogs took the early lead in the first when Tyler Austin singled and came all the way around to score on a single by Reymond Nunez and an error on the play. Boss Moanaroa (3-5, run) doubled to start the second for Greenville and scored on a single by Jordan Weems to tie the game.

Casey Stevenson gave Charleston the lead back in the very next half-inning against starting pitcher Luis Diaz, as Stevenson doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a balk. RiverDogs starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell (5-6) held the lead until the fifth, when Greenville took the lead and knocked Mitchell out. After a double and a single to start the inning, Keury De La Cruz lined a double into the right field corner that scored the tying run. A wild pitch brought in the go-ahead run and De La Cruz scored when the next batter grounded out as the Drive went up 4-2.

After being handed the lead, Diaz (2-4) settled down and held the RiverDogs offense scoreless. He ended up pitching six innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and six strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.

The Drive blew the game open in the eighth with four runs. After a pair of singles started the inning and a walk loaded the bases, Bryan Johns hit a sacrifice fly to score one run. Garcia (2-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs) then put the game away with a long fly over the left field wall for three runs and an 8-2 lead. They tacked on two more runs in the ninth for insurance. Matty Ott pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Greenville and Mike McCarthy got the last three outs.
