Modesto Nuts News Release
Homestand Recap
The second half for the Modesto Nuts began much better than first-year manager Lenn Sakata could have even hoped. After turning in a 34-36 record in the first half, the Nuts kicked-off with a bang sweeping the Stockton Ports in a roller-coaster of a four game series.
Thursday
Game one of the series was just a sneak peek of what was to come as the Nuts literally walked-off with a win as outfielder Juan Crousset drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning to give Modesto a 6-5 win. The Nuts trailed the Ports 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but brought the score to even when infielder Casey Frawley drove in fellow infielder Cristhian Adames on a mishandled ground ball to Ports second basemen Michael Gilmartin. This was the Nuts first win this season when they had trailed in the eighth inning or later.
Friday
Game two was a complete opposite as the Nuts shutout Stockton 3-0. Modesto right-hander Juan Gonzalez was brilliant giving up just three hits while striking out seven, over six innings earning his first win since May 12th. The 1B/DH combo of Mark Tracy and Kyle Parker gave Gonzalez all the runs he needed as the pair each crushed solo home runs (4 & 5 respectively) in the bottom of the second. Lefty Isaiah Froneberger continued the mound domination as he retired five Ports in a row after a lead-off double to Beau Taylor. Righties Chad Rose and closer Adam Jorgenson recorded final four outs of the shutout.
Saturday
Saturday's match-up put Stockton lefty Jacob Brown against the newest Nuts starter Kennil Gomez. Little did the teams know that this would be one of the longest nights of their professional career. It wasn't the ideal beginning for Gomez as he lasted just two innings after giving up three runs on four hits and three walks. Modesto got back into the game and managed to take a 6-4 lead into the ninth and reliever Rose was once again called upon, this time to close out the game. The right-hander walked the bases loaded and then gave up a first pitch, 2 RBI single to Taylor. The two teams went back and forth for the next six innings, even as position players took over on the mound for each team. Ports third basemen Tony Thompson retired all six Nuts batter he faced as he battled Modesto first basemen Jared Clark, who took over in the 16th inning for the Nuts. The 6'4", 215 pound first basemen tossed three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit on his way to the win. Modesto managed to push the winning run across after five hours and five minutes and 18 innings after Helder Velazquez drove in Dustin Garneau on a single to right field.
Sunday
After the marathon that was game three, the Nuts and the Ports played yet another nail biter with Modesto again coming out on top 5-3. All-Star lefty Tyler Matzek began the game on the mound and went 6 2/3 allowing three runs but striking out seven. Outfielder Crousset gave the Nuts what became the winning run on a solo home run (3) to right field in the fifth.
The Nuts will return home for a three game series July 1st, 2nd and 3rd as they take on the Lancaster JetHawks.
