Three Home Runs Propel Giants Past Ports

SAN JOSE - Alex Burg, Luke Anders and Ricky Oropesa each homered for San Jose to help the Giants to a 6-2 victory over the Stockton Ports on Tuesday evening in front of 4,003 fans at Municipal Stadium. Taylor Rogers tossed seven strong innings on the mound to pick-up the win as San Jose snapped their three-game losing streak.

Burg (3-for-4, HR, RBI) also singled twice, in addition to a solo home run, to lead an eight-hit Giants offensive attack. Burg has homered in back-to-back games to start the series. Anders (1-for-1, HR, 2 RBI) and Oropesa (1-for-4, HR, RBI) added their fifth and ninth home runs of the season respectively.

Rogers (5-6) won his third consecutive start after matching a season- high in innings pitched. The right-hander allowed just two runs (both earned) on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

San Jose never trailed in the contest scoring twice in bottom of the third inning to take the early lead. Burg led off the frame with a single - the Giants' first hit of the night. After Anders walked, Bobby Haney reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Consecutive RBI groundouts from the next two hitters, Ryan Lollis and Joe Panik, then gave San Jose a 2-0 lead.

Oropesa made it 3-0 when the led off the bottom of the fourth with a towering home run to deep right field. Then with two outs, Burg singled before Anders stepped to the plate and launched a two-run homer to right center for a 5-0 advantage.

Rogers began his start with four scoreless innings. He worked around a pair of one-out singles in the top of the second to keep the game scoreless. Rogers allowed a one-out single in the third, but quickly set down the next two batters to end the inning. He then needed just eight pitches to toss a 1-2-3 top of the fourth.

Stockton finally broke through in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs as Dusty Robinson started the inning with a single before Michael Gilmartin drew a walk. Yordy Cabrera followed with a single to left as Robinson scored the first Ports run of the night. On the play, Gilmartin advanced to third, but Cabrera was thrown out at second for the first out of the inning. Chad Oberacker followed with an RBI groundout to bring Stockton to within 5-2.

Rogers recovered to strikeout a pair of batters in a perfect top of the sixth and then Burg crushed a two-out, solo homer to deep left in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2.

Rogers finished his night with another 1-2-3 frame in the top of the seventh. He retired the last seven batters that he faced.

Josh Osich (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) then struck out two in a scoreless top of the eighth before Jose Valdez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) kept the Ports off the scoreboard in the ninth to seal the victory.

Blake Treinen (6-6) suffered the loss for Stockton yielding six runs (all earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Notes: San Jose's three home runs matched a season-high (fourth time) ... The Giants out-hit Stockton by an 8-7 margin ... Haney (2-for-3) also finished with a multi-hit game ... The 7-8-9 batters of Burg, Anders and Haney combined for six of the eight San Jose hits ... Burg has six home runs this season ... He's 5-for-8 with two home runs and three RBI's over the first two games of the series ... Rogers is 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA (5 ER/20.0 IP) over his last three starts ... The Giants improved their second half record to 3-3.

On Deck: The Giants and Ports will play the rubber game of their three- game series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 7:00 PM. Jack Snodgrass (7-2, 3.47 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with Sean Murphy (3-2, 3.05 ERA).
