'Riders Late Inning Comeback Falls Short

MIDLAND, TEXAS-The RoughRiders scored four runs in a row, but Midland's bullpen was able on, as the RockHounds earned a 5-4 series split Thursday night at Citibank Ballpark. The RoughRiders put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth, however Paul Smyth got Engel Beltre to bounce out to end the game.After Chad Bell (2-2) set down the RockHounds on 12 pitches in the first, Midland batted around in the second. Named to the Futures Game earlier in the day, Michael Choice led off the frame with a double to left. The next batter Miles Head also tacked on a two-bagger to make it 1-0 "Hounds. It was Head's first Double-A hit, after joining the team earlier in the day from High-A Stockton.
Following walks to Michael Spina and Dusty Coleman, Conner Crumbliss brought home Head and Spina with a single to center, Ladendorf also added an RBI base hit, while Crumbliss came home on a wild pitch to make it a five run inning.
Making his first start of the season, Carlos Hernandez (1-3) retired the first 13 batters he faced, before Alex Buchholz singled with one out in the top of the fifth. Two batters later, Ryan Strausborger added an RBI double to give Frisco its first run.
The "Riders continued to chip away in the top of the eighth inning against Shawn Haviland. Jared Prince manufactured the "Riders first run, first getting hit by a pitch, and later scoring on a fielding error by "Hounds third baseman Miles Head. Engel Beltre also came home on a base knock by Jurickson Profar.
Trailing by two, Jared Prince stroked a two out double off Arnold Leon, and scored on a single by Jose Felix, prompting a pitching change by "Hounds manager Steve Scarsone. On to face Engel Beltre, Paul Smyth got the "Riders centerfielder to ground out to second, ending the ballgame.
Carlos Hernandez picked up the win, tossing five innings of two hit baseball. He allowed an earned run and struck out two. Chad Bell drew the loss, he worked six innings, allowed five runs (all in the second inning), walked two and struck out five. Paul Smyth recorded the one out save.
Frisco returns to the metroplex to begin a four game homestand with Corpus Christi on Friday. Barrett Loux (12-0, 3.03) makes the start for the RoughRiders, he will be opposed by Hooks right-hander Bobby Doran (-,-) who makes his first start of the season for the Hooks. At High-A Lancaster Doran was 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30.
