Catcher Castillo Optioned to Iowa

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs optioned catcher Welington Castillo to Iowa yesterday, and he will join the I-Cubs in Round Rock this week. Chicago recalled left-handed pitcher Scott Maine from Iowa, and also activated catcher Geovany Soto from his rehab assignment at Iowa yesterday.

Castillo began the season with Iowa and was promoted to Chicago on April 28. He is hitting .206 (7-for-34) with two doubles, one home run and four RBI in nine games with Chicago this season.

The 25-year-old backstop is hitting .320 (16-for-50) with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 16 games with Iowa this season.

Maine begins his third stint with the parent Cubs this season, compiling an 0-1 record and a 6.35 ERA (4 ER/5.2 IP) in six relief appearances during his first two stints. He has held major league opponents to a .105 batting average (2-for-19) while striking out 10.

The former University of Miami Hurricane is 3-2 with five saves and a 3.42 ERA (10 ER/26.1 IP) in 22 relief appearances with Iowa. He has posted a 0.79 ERA (1 ER/11.1 IP) in his last 10 outings with the I-Cubs spanning from May 25.

Soto batted .188 (3-for-16) with two doubles in five games with the I-Cubs during his rehab assignment.

The Iowa Cubs begin the first of a four-game series in Round Rock tonight at 7:05 p.m. Iowa and Round Rock will return to Des Moines on Saturday, to begin a three-game set as part of a seven-game home stand for the Cubs.
