ROUND ROCK, Texas - Right-hander Willie Eyre was signed to a minor league contract by the Texas Rangers and was assigned to the Round Rock Express. He will be active tonight as the Express open a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs at The Dell Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT.

Eyre was released by the Baltimore Orioles last week after making 21 relief appearances for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He was 1-3 with a 7.92 ERA (22 ER/25.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts against 15 walks. Eyre last pitched June 8 at Rochester.

Eyre is no stranger to the Rangers system. After spending eight seasons (1999-2006) in the Minnesota Twins organization, he pitched in the Rangers organization from 2007 to 2010. He missed the entire 2008 season due to injury. Eyre was 10-10 with a 3.79 ERA (84 ER/199.2 IP), 142 strikeouts and 76 walks in 119 relief outings and two starts between the Rangers and then-Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City. He was 4-6 with a 5.16 ERA (39 ER/68.0 IP) in two starts and 31 relief outings for the Rangers in 2007, and he was 5-4 with a 3.50 ERA (28 ER/72.0 IP) in 49 relief appearances for Oklahoma City in 2010.

Eyre started the 2011 season with Triple-A Sacramento (Oakland Athletics), going 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA (24 ER/62.0 IP) in two starts and 37 relief outings. He spent the remainder of the 2011 season in the Orioles organization, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three relief outings at Norfolk and 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA (7 ER/18.1 IP) in 19 relief appearances with the Orioles. Eyre, who made his Major League debut April 6, 2006, with the Twins, is 7-8 with a 4.95 ERA in 11 career MLB games.

Tommy Mendonca was placed on the disabled list prior to tonight's game, making room for Eyre on Round Rock's 25-man roster.
