Greenville Routs Augusta 9-2 Nine Unanswered Runs Drive Greenville Win

June 16, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Greenville Drive managed to throw ice water on the hottest team in the South Atlantic League, picking up a 9-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in front of 4,379 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday night.

For the first time in the series, the GreenJackets scored first. Jesus Galindo tripled to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score on Shawn Payne's RBI groundout to give Augusta an early 1-0 lead. But in this series, scoring first hasn't been a good thing. Greenville scored first in the first three games of the set - all losses - and the same luck would befall the GreenJackets on Saturday night.

Greenville scored the game's next nine runs to build up a big lead. The Drive tied things at one in the very next half inning on Lucas Leblanc's RBI double - the first hit surrendered by Joe Biagini. In the third, the Drive took advantage of two hits and a pair of Biagini walks to score three runs and claim a lead they wouldn't lose. Drew Turocy beat out a would-be, inning-ending double play to bring home the go-ahead run and keep the inning alive. With two outs, Boss Moanaroa doubled home two more to put Greenville on top 4-1.

The Drive kept the runs coming - scoring two more in the fifth on RBI doubles by David Renfroe and Henry Ramos. In the sixth, Greenville added another on Turocy's RBI single. Greenville stretched their lead to 9-1 in the seventh on a Jordan Weems RBI groundout and Dreily Guerrero's RBI single.

Down to their last nine outs, Augusta threatened to get back into the game in the seventh inning. Jose Cuevas walked to lead off the inning and took third on a pair of wild pitches. Garrett Buechele singled to score Cuevas to break Greenville's string of nine unanswered runs. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs for Shawn Payne, who owns one of Augusta's two grand slams this season. Payne struck out swinging to end the inning and the GreenJackets never again mounted a threat. Matty Ott retired six of the game's final seven hitters to finish his four-inning relief stint with his third save of the year.

Biagini (0-4) looked sharp in the first two innings, retiring six of the game's first eight hitters, but faltered in the end. He allowed seven runs - four earned - on seven hits and a season-high five walks in 5.2 innings while striking out a career-best seven hitters.

Greenville starter Scott Swinson (4-0) picked up his fourth win in as many starts, firing five strong innings for the Drive. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three.

Despite the loss, the GreenJackets have still won ten of their last 13 games as they head into their final game of the first half. The GreenJackets will look to take four of five from the Drive on Sunday with Paul Davis (3-2) taking the ball for Augusta against Luis Diaz (0-3, 6.75) in the first-half finale. First pitch comes at 2:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
