Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (30-35) fell victim to a 10-run explosion in the 6th inning by the Reno Aces (39-27), who came in to the game ranked first in the Pacific Coast League in runs scored, turning an early lead for the Sky Sox into a 13-7 loss for Colorado Springs in the second game of a three-game set with the first-place Aces.
With the Sky Sox leading 3-2 in the fifth inning, Colorado Springs jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind outfielder Andrew Brown's team-leading eighth home run of the season, but in the next half inning Reno retaliated in a big way with 10 runs on six hits in the sixth inning. Thirteen batters came to the plate in the inning for the Aces, with eight of the nine batters in the Reno lineup coming around to score and second baseman Taylor Harbin and left-fielder Rusty Ryal scoring twice in the frame. With the Aces up 8-6 after 11 batters came to plate Ryal delivered the knockout punch with a two-out grand slam, his second homer of the game.
The ten runs in an inning were the most allowed by the Sky Sox this season and the first time Colorado Springs has allowed double-digit runs in an inning since August 23, 2010 against the Fresno Grizzlies at Security Service Field, which was also in the sixth inning of that loss. The Sky Sox have let across ten or more runs in an inning twelve times in franchise history.
Brown drove in four of Colorado Springs seven runs in the game upping his team-leading RBI total to 48 on the season, and his 41 RBI since the beginning of May is the most in all of Triple-A. Also in the game Sky Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler extended his team-high hitting streak to ten games with a single in the sixth inning, the third double-digit game hitting streak by a Sky Sox player this season. Wheeler has collected a hit in all ten of his career games at Security Service Field.
In the series finale, Rockies All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will make his third career appearance for the Sky Sox as he will be completing a Minor League Rehab assignment for his injured groin. With a series win on the line in the rubber game of the series, two top pitching prospects will match up with Colorado Springs sending out left-hander Drew Pomeranz (2-3, 1.80 ERA) and the Aces sending out right-hander Trevor Bauer (3-0, 1.97 ERA) at 12:35 p.m. MT.
