Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Strong pitching performances from starter Andy Reichard and relievers Daryl Maday and Brett Bochy along with Ehire Adrianza's big night at the plate propelled the Richmond Flying Squirrels (30-34) to a 3-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (22-40) Tuesday night at The Diamond.

Richmond drew first blood in the bottom of the second when Adrianza deposited a 3-1 offering from Fisher Cats starter Deck McGuire over the right field wall. It was the first Double-A home run for Adrianza, whose last home run came on August 22, 2011 when he was a member of the San Jose Giants.

The Fisher Cats immediately answered with a run off Reichard in the top of the third. Ryan Goins led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Mike McDade laced a double to left field, which plated Goins and evened the score at 1-1.

But Richmond struck back in the bottom of the third. Gary Brown reached on a one-out infield single and promptly stole second base. Daniel Mayora followed with a single, which gave the Flying Squirrels runners at the corners. After McGuire retired Juan Perez on a fly out, Tommy Joseph ripped an RBI single, which gave Richmond a 2-1 edge.

The Flying Squirrels added a run in the fourth. Adrianza led off the inning with a bunt single and he advanced to second on Juan Ciriaco's groundout. Ryan Cavan delivered an RBI double that scored Adrianza and extended Richmond's lead to 3-1.

Meanwhile, Reichard (1-2) was sharp on the mound. The right-hander limited New Hampshire to five hits and one earned run and he recorded a season-high five strikeouts in six innings pitched. As a result, he earned his first Double-A win in Richmond's triumph.

Richmond reliever Daryl Maday retired all six batters he faced in two scoreless innings. But things took a dramatic turn in the top of the ninth. Flying Squirrels closer Brett Bochy issued a leadoff walk to Brian Van Kirk to start the frame. Kenen Bailli ripped an RBI double to deep center field that scored Van Kirk and reduced Richmond's advantage to 3-2. Brian Bocock followed with a sinking line drive to center field. Brown made a shoestring catch and fired a strike to Cavan to double off Bailli at second base. Bochy struck out Gabe Jacobo to end the game and seal the win.

The Squirrels and Fisher Cats will square off again in game two of the three-game set at The Diamond Wednesday night. Richmond will send right-hander Chris Heston (6-2, 0.98) to the mound. New Hampshire has not announced a starting pitcher. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
