Hernandez and Fitzgerald battle in pitcher's duel

Portland, Maine - Sea Dogs' Chris Hernandez (3-5, 2.88) and Richmond's Justin Fitzgerald (3-5, 4.77) battled in a pitcher's duel at Hadlock Field in Saturday Night's game. Both starters were unscathed through five innings in the game that was played in front of 5,191 fans and took 2:25 to complete.

Chris Hernandez came into Saturday's game with a 2-5 record but sported a 3.21 ERA. Hernandez hurled seven shutout innings giving up four hits. He compiled four strikeouts and walked three batters.

Fitzgerald threw five scoreless innings to start the game for the Squirrels but faltered in the bottom of the sixth.

The Sea Dogs broke the 0-0 tie in their half of the sixth inning. Heiker Meneses drew a walk to lead-off the frame. Jeremy Hazelbaker reached on a bunt single and took second base on a throwing error by Daniel Mayora. Meneses came around to score from first on the play. Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a two out two run homer (12) that put the Sea Dogs in front 3-0.

Brock Huntzinger came into the game in relief of Hernandez in the 8th inning and finished the night for the Sea Dogs pitching staff. Huntzinger picked up his first save of the season and allowed one run on two hits; he also had one strike out.

Richmond cracked through in the top of the ninth after eight shutout innings between Hernandez and Huntzinger. Ryan Cavan doubled (8) with two outs in the inning. The next batter, Mark Minicozzi, hit a ground rule double that scored Cavan.

Rodriguez went 2-2 in the game. He is 8-16 (.500) in the last five games. Juan Carlos Linares' (0-3) hitting streak was halted at 11 games.

The Sea Dogs conclude the three game series Sunday and 1:00 PM. The Dogs' LHP Drake Britton (1-0, 0.00) is slated to face RHP Craig Westcott (6-4, 3.64) of Richmond. Tickets are available by calling the Sea Dogs ticket office at 207-874-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com.
