Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats received another solid pitching performance and timely hitting to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-1 in front of 5,074 on Friday night at Five County Stadium.
With the win, the Mudcats (29-31) inch a game closer to the Pelicans (30-30) for third place in the Southern Division.
Kyle Blair (4-1) made an early four-run lead stand until the ninth by tossing five scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed three hits, walked three and struck out two for his third straight winning decision.
The Pelicans' Randy Henry (4-2) was hit for four runs on six hits in his first professional start. The right-hander's night ended after two innings.
Carolina plated four runs in the pivotal second inning. Anthony Gallas began the assault with a single. It was quickly followed by a double from Ronny Rodriguez into the left field corner. Gallas scored on the hit, and the Mudcats led 1-0.
Tyler Cannon stayed red hot with single, his eighth hit in 12 at-bats, to score Rodriguez. Leading 2-0, Tyler Holt singled to put two on for Tony Wolters. The 19-year-old middle infielder cracked a double off the top of the left field wall that scored both runners for a 4-0 advantage.
Cannon and Wolters both finished with two hits.
Jose Monegro settled things down for the Pelicans by retiring the final 13 batters he faced. His only blemish was a solo home run by Carlos Moncrief to lead off the third.
Carolina hosts the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for two games on Saturday, June 9. Both games will be seven innings with 30 minutes between. Game one is scheduled for a 5:15 p.m. first pitch. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
