Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season on Friday night in Lynchburg, as the Keys tamed the Hillcats 5-3 and 1-0. The Keys grabbed the lead in the first inning of both doubleheader games and then held on late to notch two victories.
The Keys are in fourth place in the north but are now four games out with ten games to play. The Keys trail Lynchburg and have seven of their remaining ten games against the Hillcats.
In game one the bats came to life early. Frederick strung together four consecutive hits beginning with RF Jeremy Nowak to grab the early lead. With the bases loaded and one down, C Justin Dalles doubled home two runs. DH Mike Flacco then grounded out to add a third tally and the Keys led 3-0.
Lynchburg chipped away against Keys starter Dylan Bundy. The Hillcats registered two doubles in the second inning to earn a run and then got a third inning solo home run from SS Nick Ahmed to make it 3-2. Bundy (2-1) would depart the game with a 4-2 lead after the fifth inning. He allowed four hits in five innings while walking three and striking out five batters.
Leading 5-3 in the seventh inning Lynchburg threatened to tie the game. With two men on and two men down2B Tommy La Stella hit a ground ball that Keys 2B Mike Rooney bobbled. The lead runner though Mycal Jones fell down rounding third base and the Keys would get him in a run down, tagging him out at home to end the game. The tying runner was left stranded at second base.
Frederick grabbed the lead in game two early as well. CF Bobby Stevens opened the game by ripping a double down the left field line. He scored two batters later on an RBI-single from LF Ty Kelly. The Keys loaded the bases with one down in the inning but failed to add on any runs. That would be a theme as the Keys left on 11 runners in the game.
But Frederick's pitching made the run stand tall. RHP Eddie Gamboa (1-0), down from Triple-A Norfolk, faced just two batters over the minimum in six innings. He gave way to RHP Clay Schrader in the seventh and after walking two batters with one out, Schrader fanned the last two hitters to end the game. Once again the tying runner was left stranded at second base.
The Keys have another doubleheader in Lynchburg Saturday, June 9th at 4:05 p.m. with Scott Coipeland and Tyler Wilson getting the starts. Coverage begins ten minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source.
Frederick returns home with RHP Dylan Bundy on the hill Thursday, June 14th at 7:00 p.m. for Peanut Free Night presented by The Frederick Allergy and Asthma Center. For tickets contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
