THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2-1...Two of the top three ERAs in the league met with RHP Cody Buckel throwing for the Pelicans and RHP J.R. Graham on the mound for the Hillcats...Graham went seven innings, and allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five on his way to his seventh win...Buckel lasted five and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out five...He took the loss...C Braeden Schlehuber starred offensively for Lynchburg...Went 3-for-4, and scored both Hillcat runs...The Hillcats are now 30-28 and remain in first place in the Northern Division by just 2.5 games with 12 to play...
VS. FREDERICK: Lynchburg leads the season series 4-1 over the Keys...This weekend they will play two doubleheaders to make up for back-to-back rainouts April 21-22 in Lynchburg earlier this year...Five games are scheduled in just three days...The Hillcats split two games at home against the Keys this year, and swept them in three games up in Frederick April 27-29...Last year, Lynchburg won the season series 11-9, and went 5-5 at home...
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT: The Hillcats snapped a season-worst eight-game losing streak Wednesday night and have now won two in a row...After losing eight straight the Hillcats saw their season-long Northern Division lead fall to a season-low half game...The streak snapping win was an emphatic one that saw the 'Cats score a season-best seven runs in a single inning...Seven runs was also equal to the number of runs scored in games two through seven of the losing streak (two or less in each game)....Overall the 'Cats were outscored 44-14 over the eight-game slide...Winning their last two in a row, the Hillcats ahead by 2.5 games in the North over the second place Wilmington Blue Rocks...
TREY FOR SCHLE': C Braeden Schlehuber went 3-for-4 last night and scored both Hillcats runs in a 2-1 win...It was his third three-hit game of the season...He homered in both other three-hit games (4/6 and 4/25)...He collected three singles last night and raised his average 16 points, from .267 to .283...Now on a four-game hitting streak, he is 6-for-15 in the stretch with a triple, a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored...
HOT SALCE': 3B Edward Salcedo was in the midst of a 6-for-44 (.136) slump over 13 games (including one pinch-hit appearance) after going 0-for-5 last Tuesday night...Was going to get a night off Wednesday but a late scratch forced him into the lineup...Salcedo turned in his fourth three-hit game of the season and saw his average rise nine points to .252...It had dropped from .265 to .243 during the aforementioned slide...Last night, he added another multi-hit effort...Went 2-for-4 and saw his average climb to .257...
FOUR FOR FOURTH: LHP Matt Chaffee completed four innings for the first time in his career Wednesday night...He entered in the sixth and finished the game for the Hillcats, recording his fourth save of the season...The 2011 12th round selection had only completed three innings in a single outing just once before...He threw three scoreless September 3, 2011 with the Low-A Rome...He faced 17 batters, eclipsing his previous high of ten batters...Had only thrown 35 pitches in a single appearance this season prior to throwing 65 Wednesday...
THE SPARK PLUG: SS Nick Ahmed doubled in the first two runs in the seven-run third inning Wednesday night, leading to the winthe snapped the Hillcat's eight-game skid...They were his first RBI since May 25...Went ten games without driving in a run (second time that has happened this year)...The night before, he snapped an 0-for-23 stretch with a single...His average has dipped from .275 to now .246 in that stretch...It's his lowest mark since he was batting .200 four games into the season...Now he's on a three-game hitting streak (4-for-14) with a double, three RBI and a run scored during the streak...His 38 runs scored rank third in the league...Also stole his 19th base of the season last night which ranks first...
2012 DRAFT CLASS: The Braves selected RHP Lucas Sims with the 21st overall pick in the first round out of Brookwood HS in Snellville, GA...Overall the Braves selected 17 pitchers (14 RHP), ten OF, nine INF, and four C...Sims was one of 15 HS selections...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Dylan Bundy was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round in 2011 with the fourth overall selection out of Owasso High School in Oklahoma...The Tulsa native transferred from Sperry High School, a 3-A program to Owasso, a 6-A powerhouse in 2010...Won second-team All-America honors asa junior (11-1, 1.58) and was named Baseball America's High School Player of the Year in 2011...He went 11-0 with a 0.20 ERA, while also hitting .467...He struck out 322 batters in just 151 innings at Owasso...He made his professional debut this season with Low-A Delmarva after signing at the deadline for a reported $6.225 million major league contract, including a $4 million bonus...The 19 year-old entered his first professional season as the top-rated prospect in the Orioles farm system...Dominated with Delmarva....Went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA...Allowed just two unearned runs through 30 innings...Struck out 40 and walked two, and gave up just five hits...He went 13 innings (4 starts) before allowing his first hit on April 30...Promoted to Frederick on May 25 after eight starts in Low-A...Surrendered his first two earned runs of his career to the Salem Red Sox in the fourth inning of his first Hi-A start...Through two starts with Frederick, he is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA...Has allowed three runs in ten innings on nine hits...Has struck out 13 and walked just one...Bundy entered the season as one of the top-ten prospects in all of MiLB...His older brother Bobby is currently playing for Double-A Bowie, also in the Orioles organization., and is rated the 17th-best prospect in the system..
