Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - A day after the largest margin of defeat of the season, the Wilmington Blue Rocks (28-33) could fare no better against the Winston-Salem Dash (36-24) as they dropped 5-3 and 11-3 decisions in a doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark on Friday evening.
Game One was the resumption of a suspended game from April 22. The game was originally suspended in the bottom of the first inning with the Blue Rocks leading 3-1.
However, the Blue Rocks were shutout for the last eight innings. Down 3-1 in the third, the Dash showed off some two-out magic against Wilmington righty Greg Billo. Dan Black popped a double down the left field line. Brady Shoemaker then poked a base hit to left . Black was held at third but didn't have to wait long to come home when Mike Blanke doubled to left field to bring the Dash to a 3-2 deficit. Michael Earley then slapped a single which brought home Shoemaker to tie the game.
Winston-Salem seized the lead in the next inning. Jake Oester looped a single into short right field to start the frame. After going to second on a wild pitch, he made his way to third after Carlos Sanchez pounded a ball off the glove of Cheslor Cuthbert that headed to the outfield. Roman Hernandez proceeded to kick the ball but Oester had already stopped at third. A sacrifice fly from Trayce Thompson to left scored Oester and made it a 4-3 game.
In the seventh, the Dash added a tally on a single by Oester for a 5-3 advantage.
In Game Two, the Dash drummed the Rocks. The run parade started in the first inning and never let up. With a pair of men on base and two outs in the opening stanza, Wilmington starter Leondy Perez was taken to the left center field gap by Trayce Thompson for a 2-0 Winston-Salem lead.
Up 3-1 in the fourth, The Dash put together a two-out rally, this time against Chase Boruff. Boruff came on in the second inning after an apparent injury to Perez in the first. Juan Silverio singled. Marcus Semien got aboard with a walk before a double to the gap by Carolos Sanchez put the lead at 5-1.
Winston-Salem salted away the game in the fifth with a four-run frame. The bags were loaded with nobody out against Nick Rogers. Blanke took the first pitch he saw and cranked it to the gap in right field as it cleared the bases for an 8-1 margin. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Silverio.
The Blue Rocks continue their four-game set against the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. Wilmington righty Jason Adam (1-8, 3.57) duels with Dash righty Justin Collop (5-1, 4.58). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
