Myrtle Beach Falls in Bullpen Showdown

June 8, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Myrtle Beach Pelicans

ZEBULON, NC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, dropped their third straight Friday, falling 5-1 at the Carolina Mudcats' Five County Stadium.

The damage was all done in the fourth inning by Carolina. Anthony Gallas led off the inning with a single to right against Myrtle Beach starter Randy Henry. Ronny Rodriguez then doubled him home to the leftfield corner ahead of an RBI single from Tyler Cannon. The first three Mudcats hit in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Henry bounced back after that opening slide by striking out Delvi Cid. With one out Tyler Holt singled to continue the rally. He scored on a two run double by Tony Wolters off the wall in right. It was 4-0 Mudcats.

The Pelicans retaliated immediately, with a leadoff single by Edwin Garcia in the third. He would score later in the inning on a wild pitch from starter Danny Salazar.

The game, however, was really a story of relieves. The Pelicans picked up five innings of one-run ball from Jose Monegro. The big righty allowed a crushed homerun to the first batter he faced, Carlos Moncrief, but gave up just one more hit the rest of the way. Kyle Blair went five scoreless for the win for Carolina.

The Pelicans finished with eight hits, all singles. Myrtle Beach left individually 17 runners on base, nine as a team. Making his first start since high school, Henry lasted two innings, allowing four runs and upping his ERA from 0.31 to 1.55.

Saturday sets up a doubleheader beginning at 5:15. Nick Tepesch and Randol Rojas toss for the Beach against Jordan Cooper and Francisco Jimenez for Carolina. Radio coverage begins at 5:00pm on FOX Sports 1050 AM and 101.9 FM and online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
