Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 2, 2012) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators (27-28) held the Lakewood BlueClaws (19-36) to three hits in a 5-0 shutout on Saturday night in front of 2,591 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The Intimidators have won eight in a row, the team's longest streak since August of 2009.

Erik Johnson (1-0) tossed 5 and 1/3 scoreless innings in his first career start, striking out five batters while allowing three hits and walking four. Johnson, the White Sox second round pick in the June 2011 First Year Player Draft, turned the ball over to Chris Devenski with runners on first and second with one out in the sixth inning.

Devenski stranded both inherited runners, retired the next two batters to end the sixth inning. Devenski retired all 11 batters he faced over 3 and 2/3 perfect relief innings with five strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first four frames, but the BlueClaws threatened in the fifth. Kyrell Hudson led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third base on an errant throw, giving Lakewood a chance to take the lead with a man on third and no outs. Johnson struck out the next two batters and got Alejandro Villalobos to fly out to end the inning.

Rangel Ravelo led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single, and moved to second base on a Leighton Pangilinan base hit. Martin Medina bunted them both into scoring position, and David Herbek's sac- fly cashed Ravelo for a 1-0 lead.

Kannapolis pulled away with a three-run sixth inning. Bill Rice reached on a one-out single, and Kevan Smith doubled him home from first base. Mark Haddow followed with a base hit to extend his hitting streak to 15-games, moving Smith to third. Rangel Ravelo's sac-fly brought in Smith, and Pangilinan followed with a run-scoring triple for a 4-0 lead.

The BlueClaws bullpen walked four batters in the eighth inning to bring in another Intimidators run.

Lakewood starter Ramon Oviedo (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.
