Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - Chris Volstad pitched seven strong innings to lead the Iowa Cubs (22-27) to a 5-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds (17-33) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Cubs turned a season-high three double plays to support their starter. With the win, the Cubs have clinched a series win in Memphis for the first time since 2006.
The Cubs got on the board early against Redbirds' starter Nick Additon (1-5). Alfredo Amezaga and Luis Valbuena each had singles and both men scored on a double down the left field line by Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo was lifted from the game for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning due to right wrist soreness. His status is day-to-day.
The Cubs added a third run in the second inning. Ty Wright drew a leadoff walk and took two bases on a wild pitch that was also ball four to Juan Apodaca. After Volstad struck out, Amezaga singled to drive in Wright for a 3-0 Cubs' lead.
The Cubs added two late insurance runs. Matt Tolbert drew a leadoff walk pinch-hitting in the eighth. He scored three batters later on a double by Valbuena. Wright singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Apodaca in the ninth.
The Redbirds scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning. Jamie Romak led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Bryan Anderson. Volstad (2-0) allowed nine hits, but didn't walk anyone. He struck out four to earn the win.
Carlos Marmol pitched the bottom of the eighth inning for his second appearance as part of his rehab assignment. He allowed a walk to former I-Cub Lou Montanez, had two wild pitches, and struck out the side. Esmailin Caridad struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to finish the game.
The Cubs and Redbirds wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05. LH Brooks Raley (0-1, 5.40) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against RH Brian Broderick (2-6, 6.75) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 12:45.
