Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - In a rain-shortened game at Harry Grove Stadium in front of 5,916 fans, the Keys defeated the Salem Red Sox 2-1.
The win gives the Keys the series victory over the Salem Red Sox as the Keys improve to 18-27 and 6-3 on the year against Salem, who came into Frederick with the best record in the Carolina League.
With the Keys holding a 2-1 advantage in the top of the eighth inning, the skies opened up, pouring down rain as the game came to an immediate halt. With the rain unrelenting, the decision was made to make the game official, putting the Keys in the win column on Girls Night Out at the ballpark.
Kyle Simon gets his second win on the year after giving up just one earned run through 5 2/3 innings of work. His record improves to 2-6 as his ERA dips to 4.10. In his past four starts, Simon has allowed just four earned runs through 22 innings.
The Keys now go on the road for seven days before returning home on Monday to face Potomac for Bark in the Park Night where fans can bring their dog to the ballpark. RHP super-prospect Dylan Bundy is expected to pitch Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
All the scoring came in the game's first two innings, starting in the bottom of the first inning when Jeremy Nowak gave the Keys a 2-0 lead when he hit his third homerun of the year. With the first batter, Johnny Ruettiger, reaching first on a catcher's interference, Nowak launched a pitch over the left field wall to give the Keys the lead.
Salem answered in the second against Simon when Michael Almanzer doubled to bring home a runner, but that was the only run Simon would allow all night.
With the Keys unable to score against Miguel Celestino after the first inning and Simon preventing any runners himself, the score stayed deadlocked at 2-1 in favor of the Keys until the top of the eighth inning, which is when they deluge happened, making the game official through seven full innings.
The Keys now go on the road to face Winston-Salem in a five-game series that will span four days. A doubleheader will be played tomorrow, starting at 4 PM. RHP Tyler Wilson (0-1, 2.70 ERA) is expected to start game one and he'll face the Dash's Ryan Buch (2-5, 5.90 ERA).
Coverage starts at 3:40 PM on 1450 AM The Source and online at WTHU.org.
