Clinton LumberKings News Release
Peoria, ILL - The road has not been kind to the Clinton LumberKings this year as they entered tonight's contest with a 3-15 mark away from Ashford University Field. None of that mattered as Clinton started their seven-game road trip with an 11-0 pounding of the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night at O'Brien Field.
The scoring came early and often for Clinton. With one away in the first, center fielder Mario Yepez tripled to get things going. Ji-Man Choi knocked him in with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. The next batter Dan Paolini hit the second pitch he saw from Peoria starter way out to left field for his second home run of the year to make it 2-0.
With Clinton starter Trevor Miller shutting down Peoria, the LumberKings added on to the lead in the third. Shortstop Ketel Marte started the frame with an infield single. Marte stole second base and moved to third on a line drive to right by Yepez to put runners at the corners with one out. With Choi at the plate, Rosario uncorked a wild pitch allowing Yepez to move to second. On a 3-2 pitch, Choi muscled one into right to plate Marte and Yepez, making it 4-0.
It didn't take long for Clinton to add on more runs in the fourth as Jharmidy De Jesus took Rosario out to left for his second home run of the year. Dillon Hazlett and Marte both reached for Patrick Brady who laced a Rosario offering down the left field line for a two-run double. Choi was aboard when Paolini chased Rosario from the game with his second home run of the game, this time a two-run bomb to left center.
The struggles continued for Peoria in the fifth inning as Austin Reed walked three and hit two batters with the bases loaded plating two more Clinton runs. The 11 runs were more than enough for Miller who allowed five hits and no walks while recording a season-high seven strikeouts.
The two teams meet tomorrow for game two of the series as the Chiefs celebrate the 10 year anniversary of O'Brien Field. Right-hander Ambioris Hidalgo (2-5, 4.87) starts for Clinton and is opposed by left-hander Kyler Burke (0-2, 2.62) for Peoria. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
