Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs were shutout for the first time this season by the Clinton LumberKings as they fell 11-0 Wednesday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts the Chiefs at 20-26 on they head into game two of the series Thursday night at 6:30.
Clinton wasted no time getting on the board in the first against Jose Rosario. With one out, Mario Yepez put himself in scoring position with a triple to right center field. Ji-Man Choi brought home Yepez with a groundout to second, putting the LumberKings up 1-0. Daniel Paolini lifted the next pitch he saw from Rosario into the left field berm, extending Clinton's early lead to 2-0.
Ketel Marte led off the top of the third with a single and stole second. An out later, it was Yepez again lacing a single to right, this time to put runners on the corners. Choi added RBI two and three on the night as he plated two with a single to right, giving Clinton a 4-0 lead.
Clinton again resorted to the long ball an inning later. Jharmidy De Jesus started the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left giving the LumberKings a 5-0 lead. Dillon Hazlett walked and stole second before Marte reached on infield single. Rosario attempted pickoff Hazlett at second, but a missed catch error by Wes Darvill instead put both runners in scoring position with still nobody out. With the lineup turned over, Patrick Brady ripped a double down the left field line scoring both runners and putting the LumberKings in front by the score of 7-0. After a Yepez strikeout, Brady was caught stealing third with Choi in the batters box. Choi went on to walk before Paolini smashed his second homerun of the game, putting Clinton up 9-0.
After a pair of strikeouts by Austin Reed to start the top of the fifth, the right hander gave up a walk, single, and another walk to load the bases. The right-hander then hit the next two batters in Choi and Paulini on back-to-back pitches giving Clinton their 10th and 11th runs on the night.
Rosario (3-5) lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits, walking two, and striking out five. Reed replaced Rosario in the fourth, tossing 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out two. Hunter Cervenka came in to the ballgame in the sixth, hurling two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three. Jeff Lorick pitched the final two innings, setting down all six batters he saw while recording all three of his strikeouts in the eighth.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Yaniel Cabezas (DH) - The designated-hitter for Wednesday's ballgame reached all three times he came to bat, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles, and reaching on an error. The two base hits bumped Cabezas' average from .182 to .213 heading into game two of the series Thursday.
