Somerset Patriots News Release
Central Islip, NY - The Long Island Ducks (15-7) completed the sweep of the Somerset Patriots (12-11) at Bethpage Ballpark on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3. Ducks catcher Shawn Williams hit a walk-off infield single to bring across the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Ducks have now won six of seven against the Patriots this year. The Ducks improved to 9-0 at home while the Patriots dropped to 2-7 on the road.
In the top of the second inning second baseman Dan DeGeorge hit a bloop RBI single to left field to drive in catcher Yusuf Carter to put the Patriots on the board first as they led 1-0.
In the ensuing half inning the Ducks would tie the game on second baseman Wilberto Ortiz's RBI double making the score 1-1.
Ducks center fielder Kraig Binick smacked a solo home run (1) in the third inning to give the Ducks a 2-1 advantage.
Ducker third baseman Bryant Nelson blasted a solo home run (3) in the sixth inning to deep left field to put an insurance run on the board as Long Island took a 3-1 lead.
The Patriots rallied in the top of the ninth inning off Ducks standout closer Jon Meloan. With two outs shortstop Rex Rundgren and center fielder Jonny Tucker hit back to back singles. After a passed ball the runners moved up and second baseman Freddie Bynum laced a game tying clutch two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3 and extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Ducks would win in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases for Williams who hit an infield single to score right fielder Matt Esquivel to win the game 4-3. Long Island improved to 10-0 on the season when leading after seven innings.
It was a classic Sunday afternoon pitchers' duel between the two southpaw starters. Ducks starter Gustavo Chacin earned his first win of the season as he tossed five innings allowing just one run striking out four while walking none. Patriots starter Roy Merritt suffered his first loss of 2012 as went seven innings allowing just three runs striking out five and issuing no walks. Each earned no decisions.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until on Thursday, May 24th when the Patriots return home to take on the Camden Riversharks at TD Bank Ballpark at 11:05 am. For tickets, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
