Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut - Starting center fielder Ben Harrison became the first player in franchise history to homer twice in a game to help Sugar Land (9-14) clinch their first road series in franchise history and second overall series of the season Sunday afternoon at Harbor Yard.
For the first time this series, the Bridgeport Bluefish (13-10) managed to score first in the bottom of the first inning off Heath Phillips (0-2) who made his first start of the season. Phillips started the game by hitting lead off batter Joey Gathwright in the shoulder. Two more batters reached to load the bases for first baseman Luis Lopez, and with just one out, Lopez lined it into left scoring Kennard Jones from third to take a 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Skeeters to score some runs. In the second, the inning belonged to Ben Harrison. Ofilio Castro walked to lead off the inning, and after a Josh Pressley strikeout, Harrison took a 1-0 fastball deep to left. Even with a little wind, Harrison crushed the pitch 325 feet down the line (6) to put Sugar Land ahead 2-1.
The situation got worse for Bluefish starting pitcher Paul Oseguera (1-2) in the third. He retired the first two batters he faced to start the third, but the Skeeters strung five hits in a row together and used a crucial error from the shortstop to post five runs. Castro was the first to come to bat with runners in scoring position. With two on and two out, he singled through the left side of the infield scoring Jimmy VanOstrand and Jason Botts to increase the lead 4-1. After a Pressley single into the left, Harrison again came to bat with runners on base. For the first time in franchise history, Harrison hit his second home run (7) in the game with another blast out to left. The three-run dinger put Sugar Land up 7-1.
After Sugar Land added one more run in the fourth to make it 8-1, the Bluefish managed to tag reliever Duniesky Flores for two runs in the bottom half of the same inning. With a runner in scoring position, Prentice Redman sacrificed Gathwright home to make it 8-2, and Collin DeLome tripled in the third run for the Bluefish with two outs off Will Startup (3-1) to draw the score closer, 8-3.
However, the Skeeters managed to hold their lead through the final six innings keeping the final score locked at 8-3 with a stellar outing from Michael Nix to get the save (1). The team heads to York, Pennsylvania to take on the York Revolution for the second time this season and the first time on the road.
First pitch against the Revs is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CDT Monday night.
