Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - The Fort Wayne TinCaps belted three home runs, two off the bat of Casey McElroy, on Sunday afternoon en route to an 11-1 win over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. Cody Hebner pitched a career-high six innings, and tied his career high by striking out nine Dragons batters as he earned his fourth win in six tries.
The TinCaps have now won three games in a row for the first time in 2012, while the Dragons have dropped seven straight.
McElroy's day at the plate began with a first inning two-run home run off of Dayton starter Stalin Gerson (1-3). McElroy had gone deep for the first time in 2012 on Saturday night, helping the TinCaps to a 3-0 win. Fort Wayne (13-17) continued to score, and put up at least one run in each of the first four innings against Gerson. Dayton (12-18) evened the game at one with an RBI single off the bat of Sean Buckley.
In the second inning, Jace Peterson and Kyung-Min Na had back-to-back run-scoring extra base hits to extend the Fort Wayne advantage to 4-1, and Na later scored on an error by the first baseman Buckley, to make it 5-1. Mike Gallic hit his first home run of the year in the third inning, and McElroy homered again, another two-run home run, in the fourth, giving the TinCaps an 8-1 lead. Fort Wayne scored three more times in the sixth, as Duanel Jones knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Gallic plated two on a single to center.
Hebner (4-1) pitched through the bottom of the sixth inning, escaping a bases loaded jam, to complete his outing. The Auburn, Washington native allowed one run on four hits and surrendered two walks. Colin Rea pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Ruben Mejia worked a scoreless ninth in his Fort Wayne debut.
McElroy's two-home runs are the first multi-homer game of the year for any Fort Wayne player. Entering the game, the TinCaps had hit nine home runs, good for 14th in the league, while Quad Cities had smashed a league-leading 24 long balls. McElroy, Gallic, Peterson and Na all had multi-hit games.
In the last four games for the TinCaps, the starting pitching has worked 25 innings, allowed 15 hits, three earned runs, walked six and struck out 26, to the tune of a 1.08 ERA.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Monday night. The scheduled starters are Frank Garces for Fort Wayne and Dan Jensen for Dayton. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
