Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Jeff Malm hit a long, solo home run in the first inning, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (16-14) fell to the Lake County Captains (12-17) 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. Matt Rice also drove in a run for the Hot Rods, who lose for just the fifth time in 14 home games to begin the 2012 season. The Captains used a five-run fifth inning to storm past the Hot Rods for the victory.
Bowling Green was able to take the early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With Ryan Brett at third base and one out, Matt Rice sent a long fly ball into centerfield that was caught for the sacrifice fly, scoring Brett. The next batter was Malm, who sent a long fly ball over the wall in right field for his third home run of the season. Malm is now tied with Tyler Goeddel for the team lead in home runs.
However, that was all the offense for the Hot Rods on Sunday as the Captain pitchers then hurled eight scoreless frames to follow. The decisive inning in the game came in the top of the fifth when Lake County erupted for five runs on seven hits. Entering the frame, Hot Rods pitching had not allowed a run in the series. The seven hits are the most surrendered by the Hot Rods in an inning so far this year.
Bowling Green and Lake County continue their four-game series Monday night at Bowling Green Ballpark at 6:35 PM.
