Burlington Bees News Release
CLINTON, Iowa (5/6/12) - The Burlington Bees (14-15) returned a favor to the Clinton LumberKings (11-18) when they shut out the LumberKings on Sunday afternoon. The Bees won 2-to-0 a day after getting shut out in game one.
Raul Alcantara earned his first win of the season a week ago against the Lake County Captains. Coming into Sunday's game, Alcantara was 1-and-3 on the year and still looking for his first scoreless outing since August 11, 2010. The young Dominican right-hander looked every bit as sharp as he did in his previous start. He tossed six innings against the LumberKings on Sunday and only allowed Clinton to sprinkle three hits.
Despite also walking three batters, Alcantara prevented the LumberKings from making noise on the bases. Al- cantara (2-3) struck out one batter and after six innings of scoreless baseball, his ERA dipped from 6.45 to 5.08 on the year.
The offense wasn't perfect, but the Bees were able to find a couple runs between the fourth and fifth inning. B.A. Vollmuth led off the fourth inning with a screaming double on a 3-2 pitch left-centerfield. After Vollmuth advanced to third base, Douglas Landaeta lined a ball into centerfield that allowed Vollmuth to tag-up. Clinton's centerfielder Jamal Austin threw a dart to home plate, but Vollmuth was able to sneak into home a second before the tag.
The Bees scored again in the top of the fifth, which proved to be all the team needed. The defense was solid once again. The Bees had played an errorless game in four of the last seven games and added to that total on Sunday. Slick-fielding shortstop, Sean Jamieson made at least three highlight reel caliber plays and second baseman Chih- Fang Pan continues to turn double plays at second with ease.
The bullpen finished off the win by getting three solid innings from Nate Kilcrease and Max Perlman, who earned his first save of the season.
The Bees send right-handed hurler, Sean Murphy to the mound on Monday night in game three against the Lum- berKings. For more information on Bees baseball, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
