Chiefs Lose 9-2 Sunday

Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs fell behind early again Sunday afternoon and never caught up in a 9-2 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. The loss, their third in a row, drops the Chiefs to 11-19 overall and 3-8 on the roadtrip which continues with two more games in Quad Cities.

For the second day in a row the River Bandits jumped on the Chiefs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Nick Martini reached on an error by Wes Darvill at shortstop and Tyler Rahmatulla singled to right off Michael Jensen. Colin Walsh homered for the second game in a row to put the Bandits on top 3-0. The blast put Walsh in a tie for the Midwest League lead with eight home runs.

Quad Cities extended their lead in the fourth inning as Walsh led off with a single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Roberto De La Cruz put the River Bandits up 4-0 with a double to left-field. The Chiefs stayed out of the big inning as De La Cruz was thrown out at the plate on a fielders' choice and Jensen recorded a strikeout.

After leaving runners all over the base paths in the first four innings, Peoria finally got on the board in the fifth. Zeke DeVoss singled to left, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Paul Hoilman moved his hitting streak to 19 games with a single to left as Devoss scored for a 4-1 Quad Cities lead.

The Bandits responded in the fifth and knocked Jensen from the game. With one out, Martini walked and Austin Reed took over for Jensen. He hit Rahmatulla in the head and Garrett Wittles ran for the Bandits third baseman. After a strikeout and a wild pitch, De La Cruz singled home a pair for a 6-1 Quad Cities lead. An error at third base kept the frame going and Virgil Hill made it 8-1 with a two-run double to left field.

Walsh homered again in the seventh inning off Bryce Shafer for a 9-1 Bandits lead. The Chiefs finished the scoring in the ninth against Danny Miranda. Brad Zapenas led off with a hustle double and moved to third on a groundout. With two down, Darvill singled home Zapenas for the 9-2 final.

Jensen (3-2) allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Reed allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits over 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Shafer allowed one run on one hit over two innings with two strikeouts.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Ryan Cuneo (DH/P) - Zapenas reached base four times on Sunday with walks in the second, fourth and sixth innings and a double in the ninth. He scored in the ninth and now has 13 walks on the season.
