Winston-Salem Dash: Nats Edge Winston-Salem to Earn Split
May 3, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Winston-Salem Dash
WOODBRIDGE, VA (MAY 3, 2012) - Behind Kevin Keyes' RBI single in the eighth inning, the Potomac Nationals edged the Dash 6-5 Thursday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium. The Dash (16-10) dropped their second straight game after winning nine in a row. Despite the loss, Winston-Salem went 5-2 on this seven-game road trip, and they have taken six of their first eight against Potomac (10-14) this season. Winston is also 12-5 against the Northern Division in 2012.
Zach Walters led off the eighth with a single for Potomac. After stealing second, Walters reached third on a sacrifice bunt. With the infield in, Keyes slapped a single to right to push across the winning run.
Taylor Thompson (0-1) dealt a scoreless seventh inning before giving up the go-ahead tally in the eighth. Thompson suffered his first loss and allowed his second run of the season.
Trailing 1-0 through two, the Dash jumped out to their first lead with two runs in the third frame. Jake Oester clubbed an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later, Carlos Sanchez drove home another run with a single.
Brady Shoemaker added to Winston's lead in the fourth with a mammoth two-run blast to left-center. Shoemaker is second to teammate Dan Black among active Carolina League hitters with six homers, three of which came during this four-game series.
Potomac rallied with back-to-back two-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Michael Taylor chased home two with a double in the fourth. After the Dash tacked on another run in the top of the fifth on a Black fielder's choice, Justin Bloxom's responded with a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom half.
In his second career High-A start, Winston-Salem righty Steve McCray tossed four innings and allowed three runs. McCray whiffed six, which is one shy of a career high.
Out of the bullpen, Jon Bachanov was on the hill for Potomac's two-run fifth. J.R. Ballinger stranded two runners in the sixth. In the eighth, Chris Bassitt retired the only batter he faced.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark Friday night for a weekend series with the Salem Red Sox. Southpaw Spencer Arroyo (1-1, 6.65 ERA) toes the rubber for the Dash against righty Matt Couch (3-1, 3.08 ERA). First pitch is set for 7, and pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:45.
