Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - It sure felt like Wednesday night but the bats of the Wilmington Blue Rocks (11-15) were hushed once again by the pitching staff of the Salem Red Sox (14-11) as they fell 2-1 at Frawley Stadium on Thursday night.
Jackie Bradley Jr. started things off for the Red Sox in the top of the third inning when he ripped a laser off Jason Adam down the right field line that snuck over the top of the wall for a solo homer to make it a 1-0 lead for Salem.
In the sixth inning, Adam worked into trouble. He plunked the first two men in Bradley Jr. and Sean Coyle. After a pass ball that moved both runners up, Travis Shaw sent a ball to dead center field that Brett Eibner made a leaping grab on at the fence to rob him of an extra-base hit. Bradley Jr. scored on the play and made it 2-0 while Coyle moved up to third. Adam got out of further damage by striking out Xander Bogaerts and getting Christian Vazquez to fly out to end the frame.
Much like Wednesday, there were very few opportunities for the Blue Rocks offense. In the first inning, Angel Franco led off by reaching second on a single and throwing error by left fielder Drew Hedman. A sacrifice bunt attempt from Geulin Beltre bounced right to Salem starter Ryan Pressley. He made a low, accurate throw to Michael Almanzar to retire the charging Franco at third. Pressly induced fly outs of Cheslor Cuthbert and Brian Fletcher to retire the side.
In the fifth inning, Alex McClure got a two-out poke in hopes of starting a rally. Moments later, he broke for second base with Jake Kuebler batting and was gunned down easily by Sox catcher Christian Vazquez to finish the inning.
Adam (1-3) took the unlucky loss. He went seven strong innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. Thomas Melgarejo tossed a pair of scoreless frames.
Pressly (2-0) was even better than Adam. Over six shutout frames, he gave up only two hits and whiffed seven. Pete Ruiz followed with two scoreless innings and Mike Olmstead allowed one run en route to his fifth save of the year.
After a disappointing split with Salem, the Blue Rocks head to Potomac for a weekend three-game series with the Nationals with the opener scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Wilmington right-hander Yordano Ventura (0-2, 4.43) hooks up with righty Matt Swynenberg (2-1, 3.24). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
