Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Cody Buckel again shut down the Frederick Keys, helping the Pelicans to a 4-0 shutout victory.

For the 20-year old Buckel, he failed to give up a run through seven innings as he struck out eight Keys batters and gave up just three hits.

Coming into Thursday's game, Buckel lead the Carolina League in strikeouts and was fourth in ERA while also second in WHIP and opponent's batting average. In his last start against the Keys, Buckel struck out eight batters and allowed just one run on one hit through 6 1/3 innings.

With Buckel again holding true to form, the Keys were left scoreless for all seven innings he took to the mound. Relief pitcher Ben Henry completed the shutout by going two innings without surrendering a run.

Only twice all game did the Keys have a runner in scoring position as they only had more than one baserunner in an inning twice all day.

Keys' starting pitcher Kyle Simon (0-5, 5.87 ERA) was charged with the loss after giving up four earned through five innings on seven hits.

The Pelicans grabbed an early lead and never looked back as they jumped on top of Simon early on, taking a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. The first three batters of the game all reached base with singles to load the bases with nobody out. A run scored on a double play groundout, giving Myrtle Beach a 1-0 edge after one inning of play.

In the second inning, Santiago Chirino and Odubel Herrera led off the inning with singles to put two runners on with no one out. An RBI groundout from Josh Richmond made it 2-0 and then two batters later, an RBI base hit from Jared Hoying brought home another runner to give Myrtle Beach a 3-0 advantage.

They would not look back from there as those would be all the runs needed for the Pelicans to get by the Keys, who were shutout for the third time this season.

The Keys kick off a three-game series on Friday as they play the Carolina Mudcats for the first time in team history. RHP Scott Copeland (1-1, 3.91 ERA) takes the mound for the Keys against RHP Michael Goodnight (1-1, 5.82 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM and live coverage starts at 6:55 PM on 1450 AM The Source and online at WTHU.org.
