Kernels' rally falls short in 6-5 loss to Quad Cities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels loaded the bases and scored two runs in the ninth inning but fell to Quad Cities 6-5 at Perfect Game Field on Friday night. Trailing 6-3 in the ninth inning, Kaleb Cowart's two RBI single scored both Wendell Soto and Kevin Moesquit to cut the Quad Cities lead to 6-5. The Kernels then loaded the bases but were unable to get another run across.
The Kernels took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a Kaleb Cowart's RBI single plated Chevy Clarke. The River Bandits tied the score 1-1 in the third inning with a solo home run to deep left by Juan Castillo. Quad Cities added two more runs in the fourth inning, taking a 3-1 lead. Colin Walsh's RBI double scored Anthony Garcia, and Walsh came home on Tyler Rahmatulla's RBI single.
The Kernels cut the Bandits lead to 3-2 with Frazier Hall's RBI double to score Cowart in the fourth inning. Juan Castillo went deep for the second time on the evening with a solo shot to left in the fifth inning, extending the River Bandits lead to 4-2.
Ryan Crowley (0-1) started for the Kernels and went five innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. David Medina went the opposite way for a two run home run in the sixth inning . Medina's shot went to left field and gave the River Bandits a 6-2 lead.
Carmine Giardina pitched 0.2 inning in relief for the Kernels. He allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out none. Jacob Negrete threw 1.1 innings in relief and allowed no runs on no hits while striking out two and walking none. Stephen Tromblee went two innings. He allowed no runs on three hits. Kevin Moesquit's RBI double in the seventh inning scored Wendell Soto to cut the Quad Cities lead to 6-3.
Todd McInnis (1-0) started for the Bandits and picked up the win. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on seven this while striking out five and walking two. Robert Stock went 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Daniel Miranda picked up his first save for Quad Cities with a scoreless 0.2 inning pitched.
The Kernels host the Quad Cities River Bandits at Perfect Game Field on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. It's "Ugly Sweater Night" at the ballpark. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free 2012 Kernels Team Photo, thanks to Copyworks. The game will be televised locally on KCRG 9.2. The Kernels home stand continues through Sunday.
