Cleveland Monsters News Release
The Lake Erie Monsters (16-15-1-1) are on a three-game winning streak and are above .500 for the first time this season after a 3-2 shootout victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs (13-14-1-4) in Hamilton Saturday afternoon. With the Monsters down 1-0 early in the third, Patrick Bordeleau and Zach Cohen scored their first goals of the season to eventually force overtime. Rookie Tyson Barrie, who scored the gamewinner in Wednesday's overtime win against Grand Rapids, netted the winning shot in the shootout. Goalie Trevor Cann won his second straight in net.
After a scoreless first period, Philippe Lefebvre gave Hamilton a 1-0 lead at 3:45 of the second period when he carried the puck to the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat Monsters goalie Trevor Cann.
The Hamilton lead stood for over a period before Bordeleau scored his first goal of the season following the rebound from a Cohen shot under four minutes into the third period. Mike Carman also assisted on the goal.
Later in the third period, following a save from Cann, Joel Chouinard carried the puck up the ice, and fired a shot as he crossed into Hamilton territory. After the shot was blocked, Cohen found the loose puck, strolled in alone, made a move on Hamilton goalie Robert Mayer and sent the puck top-shelf for the goal; the Monsters then lead 2-1 with 4:20 remaining.
In the game's final minute with the goalie pulled at the Hamilton end, Olivier Fortier received a pass in the left circle and tied the game with a wrist shot that beat Cann under the right arm, making the score 2-2.
After overtime failed to yield a winner, the game went to a shootout, where Patrick Rissmiller and Barrie scored to secure the shootout win for the Monsters. Andreas Engqvist recorded the lone Bulldogs score.
Cann stopped 29 of 31 shots in the game to improve to 8-10-0. The shootout was the first he has been a part of this season.
The Monsters return to the ice Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena when they host the Oklahoma City Barons.
