Royals to Honour Former Captain Aspenlind Tonight

Victoria, B.C. - The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that the team will honour the first captain in franchise history Josh Aspenlind in a pre-game ceremony tonight prior to their game versus the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Aspenlind was named as the first-ever captain of the Bruins on September 28, 2006 for his 20-year-old season in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He led the Bruins to the playoffs that year, and contributed 22 goals and 35 assists for 57 points in 71 regular season games.

Prior to joining Chilliwack the Langley, BC native played for both the Prince George Cougars and the Swift Current Broncos. For his WHL career he played in 257 games netting 62 goals and adding 70 assists for 132 points as well as 487 minutes in penalties. He also competed in nine playoff games during his WHL career scoring three goals and three assists.

Aspenlind went on to a four year professional career that included time in the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose, the Binghamton Senators and Lake Erie Monsters, the ECHL with the Victoria Salmon Kings and Elmira Jackals and the International Hockey League with the Port Huron Icehawks.

Aspenlind retired this past summer after splitting last season between the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Manitoba Moose. He played in 39 games with Victoria notching 16 points in 39 games. Josh provided one of the best moments in Salmon Kings history when he scored the game winning goal in Game 2 of the team's Western Conference Semi-Final series versus the Utah Grizzlies. Aspenlind snapped the winning goal a mere 11 seconds into overtime matching a new ECHL record for fastest overtime goal in league history. Ironically, Aspenlind also holds the record for scoring the goal that ended the longest game in ECHL playoff history. While playing for the Elmira Jackals, he scored at 6:10 of the fourth overtime period to beat the Trenton Devils in their second round series.

For his pro career Aspenlind played in 279 games amassing 119 points (38g-81a) while collecting 314 minutes in penalties. He also played in 33 playoff games scoring seven goals and nine assists for 16 points.

The Royals finish up their two-game set with the Seattle Thunderbirds tomorrow night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
