Salem Red Sox Kick off "Opening Day Take 2" on June 23

SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox will host "Opening Day Take 2" on Thursday, June 23, the start of the second half of the Carolina League season. Salem is holding this celebration to make up for heavy rains causing both Opening Day 2011 and the following night's game to be postponed. The six-game homestand from Thursday, June 23 to Tuesday, June 28 will feature a number of promotions including a concert with Shontelle and a visit from the Boston Red Sox official mascot "Wally the Green Monster."

Recording artist Shontelle, whose hits include "Impossible" and "Say Hello to Goodbye," will perform live in concert on Saturday, June 25 at 5:00 p.m. before the Red Sox game. The concert is included in the purchase of a ticket to the game.

"We had a very rainy Opening Weekend in April and didn't get a chance to play on Friday or Saturday," said Salem Red Sox general manager, Todd Stephenson. "We want to give our fans the chance to come out to a real Opening Day to kick off the second half of the season."

In honor of "Opening Day Take 2," the Sox will have in-game promotions throughout the weekend.

. If a Red Sox player hits a double, there will be a ballpark-wide 2 for 1 special on hot dogs.

. If a Red Sox player hits a 2-run homerun, all fans will receive a 2 for 1 special on all items at the Ted Williams Grille.

. If the Red Sox score more than 2 runs in an inning, fans will receive a 2 for 1 ice cream special.

. If the Red Sox turn a double play, fans will receive 2 for 1 popcorn.

. If the second batter for the visiting team strikes out, all fans will enjoy a 2 for 1 special on all beverages.

All specials last until the following inning.

The homestand opens with "Thunder Thursday" on June 23 featuring $1 beverages. The Boston Red Sox official Mascot "Wally the Green Monster" will be at LewisGale Field on both Friday and Saturday for Wally Weekend.

Sunday is "Kids Eat Free Sunday" and all children 12 and under will receive a free hot dog, chips, and soda. Sunday also features a player poster-giveaway and autograph session with Chris Hernandez for the first 1,000 fans. June 27 is a "Roanoke Times Dollar Monday" featuring $1 admission (with coupon from the Roanoke Times or Roanoke.com) and $1 hot dog and beverage specials.

The homestand concludes with a noon start time on Tuesday, June 28 featuring a "Business Special." Reserved seat tickets are only $5 for local businessmen and women.
