Hoover, AL -With ten strikeouts in 8.0 IP, Patrick Corbin led the Mobile BayBears (36-25) to a 4-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons (34-26) in front of 5,353 fans Thursday night at Regions Park.
The BayBears took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first after A.J. Pollock walked and scored on Paul Goldschmidt's two-run homer over the center-field wall.
Mobile struck again in the top of the second when Marc Krauss drew a walk, continued to third on a double to left by Ed Easley and scored on groundout by Ollie Linton, 3-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, Jacob Elmore knocked a line-drive double to left field before Goldschmidt was intentionally walked. Ryan Wheeler walked to load the bases after both runners advanced on a double steal. A groundout by Taylor Harbin plated Elmore that increased the BayBears lead to four, 4-0.
The Barons answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Greene doubled to left field, advanced to third base on a ground out by Tyler Kuhn and rushed home on Brandon Short's sacrifice fly to right field, 4-1.
Corbin (6-2) earned the victory for the BayBears after he yielded one earned run on 4 hits, 1 walk and 10 strikeouts. Reliever Mike DeMark garnered his first save of the season with one strikeout in 1.0 hitless IP.
Birmingham starter Hector Santiago (3-1) received the loss for the Barons after he allowed four earned runs on 5 hits, 5 walks and 6 strikeouts in 4.1 IP.
The Barons and Baybears continue game two of the series Friday night at Regions Park with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
Birmingham will feature right-hander Nevin Griffith (3-3, 7.59) while Mobile counters with right-handed pitcher Jarrod Parker (5-4, 4.75).
