
Flying Squirrels Soar Past Sea Dogs 7-2

Portland, Maine- The Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 7-2 Thursday night at Hadlock Field taking two of the three games in the series. Richmond improved their record to 29-30, while the Sea Dogs drop to 20-28.
Richmond jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead receiving three straight two out singles in the first inning off Alex Wilson. Drew Biery picked-up the RBI when his single scored Johnny Monell. Monell would lead the Richmond offense with a 3-for 4 performance with two runs scored and a RBI.
Portland quickly countered with three singles of their own in the first including a RBI single off the bat of Ryan Lavarnway to tie the game at one.
Wilson (5-4) would suffer the loss when he surrendered three runs in the third inning. Justin Christian would lead off the inning with a walk, steal second and scored on a wild pitch by Wilson. Monell would chip-in with a RBI single and would score on a Biery sacrifice fly.
Wilson lasted five innings yielding four runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked two.
Jeremy Kehrt entered the game for Portland and the Flying Squirrels continued to hit scoring two runs in the sixth and on in the seventh to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Sharlon Schoop ripped a double to score Nick Noonan and Aaron Lowenstein dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Noonan from third. Charlie Culberson blasted a solo home run in the seventh, his second of the series and third of the year.
Eric Surkamp (4-3) earned his fourth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.88 after holding the Sea Dogs to one run on five hits over six innings of work. He struck out six and walked a batter.
Jeremy Hazelbaker and Chih-Hsien Chiang were the only Sea Dogs to collect a multiple-hit game. Each extended their hit streaks to nine games.
The Sea Dogs' streak of hitting a home run in seven consecutive games came to an end.
The Sea Dogs will welcome the Bowie Baysox (Orioles) to town on Friday night at 7:00 PM. Right-handed pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller (1-1, 2.45) will make his first Hadlock Field start for the Sea Dogs.
