Homeruns Hurt Again as Thunder Lose Series

(Reading, PA) - The Reading Phillies (32-27) used three clutch homeruns late in Thursday night's series finale to beat the Trenton Thunder (36-24) 4-1 at FirstEnergy Stadium. Dellin Betances' dominating effort was spoiled by the Trenton bullpen, who surrendered four unanswered runs to give the R-Phils the series win three games to one.

The only offense for the Thunder came in the third inning when shortstop Yadil Mujica doubled home DeAngelo Mack from second base to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. That one-run lead stood for the length of Dellin Betances' outing on Thursday night, as the righty from Brooklyn hurled six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

As the Thunder were having a hard time figuring out Phillies' starter Ryan Edell, Reading's bats finally awoke late in the game. The R-Phils smacked three homeruns in the seventh and eighth innings off Thunder relievers to grab a 4-1 lead. Trenton could not come from behind in the ninth inning for the second straight night as Justin De Fratus slammed the door for his sixth save.

The Thunder will return home to Waterfront Park Friday to kick-start a six-game homestand. Game one of a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets begins at 7:05 PM. Trenton will turn to RHP Craig Heyer (5-3, 2.78), while the B-Mets will counter with RHP Bradley Holt (2-4, 3.67). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.

The first 1,500 fans to Friday's game at Waterfront Park will receive Thunder Baseball Card Sets presented by Verizon Wireless.
