Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - All four of the Drive ¬â¢s (15-15) games at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium were decided by a single run. Unfortunately for Greenville, the Kannapolis Intimidators (17-11) claimed three of those wins including a 1-0 shutout in Sunday ¬â¢s finale.
The game ¬â¢s only run came in the bottom of the fourth, as Drew Lee hit a pop-up into shallow right field that neither Bryce Brentz nor Sean Coyle called for. The ball dropped in for a double, allowing Kenny Gilbert to follow with an RBI-single.
A pair of Kannapolis hurlers, led by starting pitcher Paul Burnside (3-0) combined to limit the Drive to just four base hits, with only two Greenville baserunners ever getting into scoring position. Reliever Steven Upchurch picked up his second save of 2011, finishing of the Drive with two scoreless innings.
Miguel Celestino (2-2) took the tough luck loss after setting a season-high with seven strikeouts over 4.0 innings. The right-hander allowed six hits and issued a walk, before Tyler Lockwood relieved him.
Lockwood, along with Scott Swinson combined for 4.0 scoreless innings as each tossed a pair. Lockwood struckout five, and Swinson added three more to give the trio of Greenville hurlers 15 in the loss.
Four different Drive batters accounted for the team ¬â¢s hits, including Bryce Brentz who was able to extend his South Atlantic League leading on-base and hit streaks to 29 game and 20 games, respectively, with one swing of the bat.
The 22-year-old ¬â¢s streaks appeared in jeopardy as he failed to reach base in his first three at bats. But in the top of the ninth he delivered a two-out single.
The Drive ¬â¢s eight-game road trip continues on Monday as they now travel to Asheville, NC for a four-game series with the Tourists at McCormick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM, as Greenville will send southpaw Manuel Rivera (4-1, 1.45 ERA) to the mound, and Asheville will counter with right-hander Erik Stavert (1-2, 9.28 ERA).
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on May 13th, but before that their home-field will feature some exciting collegiate baseball action. The Clemson Tigers and Furman Paladins meet on Tuesday, May 10th, while the USC-Upstate Spartans take on The Citadel Bulldogs the following day. First pitch for both games are at 7 PM.
