Hassan Helps Sea Dogs Snap Road Skid

May 3, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Trenton, New Jersey- Alex Hassan came up with a big two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, leading the Portland Sea Dogs to a 5-2 win over the Trenton Thunder on Tuesday. The victory snaps a four game losing streak overall and six game losing streak away from Hadlock Field. The Eastern League's leading hitter turned in another stellar performance, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in addition to the two runs batted in. Hassan's clutch at-bat was a perfect example of his patience at the plate, fouling off a number of pitches from Trenton reliever Pat Venditte before lining one down the left field line, turning a one run game into a three run advantage for Portland.

Sea Dogs starting pitcher Alex Wilson threw five solid innings, allowing just four hits and two runs to earn his league-leading fourth win of the year. Blake Maxwell went two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season and the first since the season-opening series against Reading. Seth Garrison also continued his strong start to 2011 by throwing two scoreless innings to get his fourth hold.

The trouble for the Thunder started early on as the Sea Dogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Wilson even took the mound. Hassan and Che-Hsuan Lin were on base with one out, when the two speedsters pulled off a double steal. That got Lin into scoring position for a Tim Federowicz sacrifice fly. Hassan would come in next on a Ryan Lavarnway RBI single.

Trenton got back into the game late in Wilson's outing. Brad Suttle got an RBI double in the fourth inning. Then, Jose Gil led off the fifth inning with a solo shot, cutting Portland's lead to 3-2. That set the stage for Hassan's late-inning heroics. Venditte allowed a leadoff single to Vladimir Frias in the ninth, who then moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Dening. After a fly out by Lin, Venditte walked Jon Hee before Hassan's double. Frias enjoyed his Double-A debut, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base, all while playing some excellent defense at shortstop.

Portland and Trenton meet for the third of their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Stolmy Pimentel is scheduled to take the mound for the Sea Dogs. The Portland righty is still looking for his first win this season. The Sea Dogs head back to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats starting May 6. That night will be a Fireworks night sponsored by U.S Cellular. Sunday, May 8th will be Portland's annual Mother's Day 5K Road Race.
